Microsoft have said that they will be launching a version of their best selling productivity suite Office on the Ipad. Microsoft will probably break out the apps from the suite and sell them separately and will probably make quite a lot of money. This is however a major double edged sword for Microsoft if they take this approach. On one hand, the Ipad is the tablet juggernaut to beat and if Microsoft can get those users on Office, it is a substantial amount of revenue for the company. In a seminar held at CERN yesterday (13 December 2011), the ATLAS and CMS experiments presented the status of their searches for the Standard Model Higgs boson. Their results are based on the analysis of considerably more data than those presented at the summer conferences, sufficient to make significant progress in the search for the Higgs boson, but not enough to make any conclusive statement on the existence or non-existence of the elusive Higgs. The main conclusion is that the Standard Model Higgs boson, if it exists, is most likely to have a mass constrained to the range 116 - 130 GeV by the ATLAS experiment, and 115 -127 GeV by CMS. As many outsiders thought would happen, RIM has delayed the launch of its next-generation BlackBerry devices that make use of its new QNX-based operating system. On a conference call with analysts, RIM co-CEOs said that, for a variety of reasons, the company has pushed out the release. In particular, Balsillie said the company has selected a chipset that won’t be available until mid-2012, meaning its first devices won’t be available until “the latter part” of 2012. Almost a month ago, we talked about flexible paper thin AMOLED and transparent displays. Samsung Mobile Display, produced recently, a new short Video (in Korean) showing a transparent, flexible 3D AMOLED display based tablet. This is obviously just a concept device, and it'll take years before they'll be able to commercialize something like that, but it's still very cool. Flexible OLEDs are still not available, but Samsung does plan to start producing these in 2012.
