There is a marketing blitz going on for a solar tower company that has inked a contract to build a massive tower in the Arizona desert that turns heat generated by a greenhouse into electricity by directing it up a massive chimney twice that when built will be the second tallest building in the world. Apparently they can use the energy generated to provide power for 150,000 homes. They also say the build costs will be paid off within 11 years of operation and the life span is 80 years. Torresol have brought the Gemasolar 19.9MW solar heated salt turbine aka “Concentrated Solar Power” online in Spain. The Turanor Planet Solar demonstration vessel is now halfway around the world on a promotional and research journey to prove the case for a solar powered cargo ship. Built in Germany the vessel is capable of transporting upto 40 people and has a permanent crew of 6 onboard. One thing seems to be missing though. With a top speed of 15 mph it is not much faster than a sail vessel. So the question begs to be asked. Why didn’t they include a collapsable lightweight sail? MIT scientist Daniel Nocera has released new publicity around his solar leaf concept. The basic idea is that instead of converting sunlight to electricity and storing it in a battery, use the electricity to split hydrogen from water allowing the hydrogen to be used in a hydrogen fuel cell. An inherently lossy process which will require a system to keep hydrogen and oxygen separated until it can be directed into the fuel cell for conversion back to electricity. The Gravity plane is a very efficient use of the energy available from buoyancy, thrust, acceleration and wind. It won’t be as fast as a petroleum powered engine but it will still get from A to B. Assuming they can make enough high strength composite material to withstand the force of acceleration on the hull and wings this “amazing flying machine” would be a useful transportation option for non urgent transportation requirements. Latest news has lasers as the solution to the problem of igniting leaner ratios ex. gasoline to water. The film, called Olive, went up on Kickstarter and was shot entirely using a Nokia N8 phone and a specially crafted 35mm lense. An interesting twist on the Hydrogen production system using sunlight and water to react with copper and aluminium oxide that when heated to 200 Degrees Celsius and combined with “catalytic nano particles” initiate a chemical reaction to quickly release the stored hydrogen. The Hydrogen is then fed into a Fuel cell battery to provide a constant source of power to a household. At the end of September we found out that until 2011 ended, AMD planned to launch two new chips in its A-Series APU product family which were supposed to come with unlocked multiplier, dubbed the A6-3670K and A8-3870K, and these two processors have now become available for pre-order in the US. Both of these processors greatly resemble their predecessors, the A8-3870K coming as a 100MHz higher clocked version of the current A8-3850, which means that it now runs at 3GHz.
