Pendant que les papetières réduisent peu à peu la hauteur de leurs productions, l'industrie forestière québécoise cherche à promouvoir de nouveaux produits issus de la transformation de la fibre de bois. Son fer de lance se cache dans une petite poudre blanche: la nanocellulose cristalline (NCC).
 
La nanocellulose cristalline est connue depuis les années 60, mais ce n'est que tout récemment que son potentiel économique s'est révélé. Contribuant à la force intrinsèque du bois, elle pourrait aussi améliorer la résistance de certains matériaux comme des peintures et des fluides ou certains textiles, croit-on.
