Collaborative Curation and Personalization The Future of Museums: A Study Report

Collaborative Curation and Personalization The Future of Museums: A Study Report | Web 2.0 for juandoming | Scoop.it

This report highlights a number of key trends that will have a significant impact on the user experience and design of future collections and museums.

This is like the 'Horizon Report' for museums.

Erica Bilder's curator insight, November 15, 2013 7:11 AM

I have nothing to add to Robin Good's terrific insights:

Robin Good's insight:

Picture these scenarios:

The Victoria & Albert Museum, its collections depleted by massive repatriation, becomes a travel & tourism guide and international affairs ambassador in an increasingly globalized community
The Freud Museum, in the spirit of its namesake, becomes a provider of mental retreat and therapy (I wonder if the docents will be licensed psychoanalysis?)

These, according to the 40-page report “Museums in a Digital Age” from Arups, may actually be some of the likely new profiles of prestigious museums 25 years from now.

The report projects that:

"...future museums will see personalised content, new levels of sustainability and a visitor experience extended beyond present expectations of time and space."

A rising desire among audiences to shape their own cultural experiences (“Collaborative Curation”)
The opportunity for museum to become “curators of experiences” that extend beyond the boundaries of traditional exhibits or programs, or beyond the walls of the museum itself.

Source: http://futureofmuseums.blogspot.it/2013/11/museums-in-future-view-from-across-pond.html ;

The idea of "collaborative curation" of museum collections by the actual users-visitors, is particularly fascinating. "Just as current consumer trends shift towards collaborative consumption, in the future, museums may employ new patterns of collaborative curation, allowing for individually curated experiences and giving the public greater control over both content and experience.
Increased visitor participation will allow people themselves to reinvent the museum experience, enabling content that can adapt to the preferences of users in real-time."

My comment: If you are a curator and are interested in exploring and understanding what the future of large collections and museums may look like and which forces are going to be driving such changes, this is a good report to read.

Insightful. Inspiring 8/10

Why I choose this topic to be my thesis topic? When I first heard this topic, I found it very attractive. In this world full of digital information, how can we find good content we need. Later I found scoop.it and Robin Good which strengthen my view that content curation is so useful. Because I found many valuable information in his topic and it really saves me a lot of time.

WordPress Curation Workflow, Resources and Tips from Nathan Weller

Robin Good's insight:

If you are interested in what could be a good workflow and set of tools to use to curate content on your own WordPress blog, Nathan Weller has a must-read article for you.

In it, he dissects and explains the tools he uses to curate content on WordPress, from how he aggregates and browses RSS feeds, to how he filters, edits and actually curates the content of each post.

Interestingly his focus is on quality, not on having his site populated by lots of "somewhat relevant" content pulled in automatically by one of the many "content marketing"-oriented curation tools available today.

I think you will find several interesting ideas that you may have not considered on how to approach your curation workflow, let alone checking the several insightful comments at the end.

Lost of valuable information, resources, examples and advice. 8/10

Robin Good's comment, November 12, 2013 9:03 AM
RebelMouse was born to build a social media hub, but it does have strong aggregation, filtering and curation capabilities. SEO-wise it is not a great choice, but also Scoop.it has quite a few limits on this front.

Rebelmouse doesn't offer all of the extras Scoop.it has, from scheduling, to sharing to an extended number of social networks, to integration with newsletter and to the backend dashboard.

Scoop.it has also a better, cleaner and more legible format, that better lends itself to more in-depth reading than just browsing titles, images and tweets.
Stan Smith's comment, November 12, 2013 9:22 AM
While I still use RebelMouse I have disconnected all inbound links because it posts it wacky and I was always having to go back and edit stuff. Now that I post stuff manually with their applet it isn't so bad. I still prefer Scoop.it though.
