ANGA: Forensic watermarking to secure premium VOD titles

ANGA: Forensic watermarking to secure premium VOD titles | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

During ANGA, Civolution is demonstrating the latest advances in its NexGuard suite of forensic watermarking solutions, which provide both a deterrent against piracy and a forensic analysis tool in case piracy occurs. The product meets requirements for the additional security measures required to offer early-release premium VOD (PVOD). The Hollywood studios are demanding that operators need to integrate transactional watermarking protection into their VOD workflow and network infrastructure to get access to PVOD titles, as it allows for forensic tracking to the source of potential illegal copies.

Civolution To Debut Real-Time Content Triggering Service For App Developers At 2012 Consumer Electronics Show

Civolution To Debut Real-Time Content Triggering Service For App Developers At 2012 Consumer Electronics Show | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Civolution announces that it will be demonstrating its new real-time content triggering service at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The new service enables synchronized ad delivery to second screen applications by leveraging Civolution’s extensive broadcast monitoring infrastructure of more than 1,700 TV channels worldwide, of which more than 1,250 are national and local channels in North America covering all 210 Designated Market Areas.

The new content-triggering service complements Civolution’s award-winning SyncNow - 2nd screen synchronization solution. Upon client-based identification through audio watermarking or fingerprinting, the SyncNow product enables identification and synchronization between broadcast, on-demand or recorded television content and interactive applications on devices such as a tablets, smartphones or laptops. Additionally, Civolution is providing automatic content recognition technology for integration with smart TVs, enabling all the value-adding opportunities of SyncNow on the larger main screen of the TV set itself.

Second screen sync: why audio watermarking is best

Second screen sync: why audio watermarking is best | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Audio watermarking is the only approach to content identification that gives broadcasters independence from service providers and full control over what happens to their content when it comes to second screen synchronisation. That is the view of Alex Terpstra, CEO at Civolution, whose ‘VideoSync - 2nd Screen’ solution uses audio watermarks in the programme feed that tablets or smartphones can ‘hear’ across a room in order to trigger events or functions within an application they are running. The watermarks can provide channel ID, programme ID and frame-accurate time codes to enable the synchronisation.

Synchronisation between what is playing on TV and what consumers do on their tablets is likely to create major new opportunities for broadcasters in terms of viewer engagement and advertising. The second screen represents green-field inventory for interactive TV and interactive advertising and we can expect a fight for control of that real-estate over the next couple of years. There are plenty of third-party app providers who want to build communities around social TV functions or special interest publishing content and ‘piggy-back’ those services onto broadcaster shows. Broadcasters will need to ensure they have their own programme-specific or channel-related second screen apps if they want to ‘own’ the viewer on both screens simultaneously.

IBC watch: Civolution and second screen synchronisation

IBC watch: Civolution and second screen synchronisation | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

During our IBC build-up we are going to highlight some products we think are worth a special mention because they will help create a new market opportunity or solve a growing problem. This week we have chosen Civolution’s ‘VideoSync - 2nd Screen’ application because of its potential to help broadcasters and advertisers to fully exploit the companion screen experience.

2011 is turning into the year of the tablet as the evidence grows that these devices are going to completely change how consumers watch TV. It is argued that these could displace the PC as the most important second screen for TV, a view offered by Peter King, Director, Connected Home Devices at research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics earlier this year.

Civolution announces its NexGuard video watermarking technology will run on Windows Azure Media Services [PR]

Civolution announces its NexGuard video watermarking technology will run on Windows Azure Media Services [PR] | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Civolution, a leading provider of technology and solutions for identifying, managing and monetizing media content, has announced that its NexGuard – Online Media Delivery (OMD) video watermarking technology will run on Windows Azure Media Services. Windows Azure Media Services is a new set of cloud-based media technologies that enable Microsoft Corp.’s customers and partners to create, distribute and manage customized media solutions across all types of devices and platforms. As the newest addition to Civolution’s extensive and award-winning forensic watermarking application suite, NexGuard – OMD enables secure delivery of digital media assets processed through the cloud on Windows Azure.

Windows Azure Media Services enables users to upload a video asset to the cloud and configure watermarked output renditions. The watermark insertion is performed in two stages. The first stage, referred to as ‘watermark pre-processing’, is performed once per media asset while transcoding original assets to the desired delivery format. The second step, referred to as ‘watermark smart embedding’ is applied upon streaming by Windows Azure Content Delivery Network (CDN) or third party CDNs.

After a media asset is passed through the NexGuard watermark pre-processor, the file is delivered in Smooth Streaming format, to PC, Mac, Xbox and whole host of connected devices like iOS, Android and Connected TV’s which are all capable of supporting smooth streaming format. This format can then be uploaded to a CDN for delivery to the end user and is fully compliant with Microsoft Silverlight. At the CDN level, a transaction identifier is applied by the NexGuard watermark smart embedder, making each delivered stream and copies thereof uniquely traceable. In November 2011 Civolution announced it joined the Akamai NetAlliance partner program as a Digital Media Solution Partner, integrating its NexGuard smart embedder technology with Akamai’s HD CDN.

Facility A/V timing : managing A/V sync remains challenging for broadcasters

Facility A/V timing : managing A/V sync remains challenging for broadcasters | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Although content distributors have recently gotten the message on audio operations — in the form of federally mandated requirements on commercial and program loudness — the issue of well-managed A/V sync remains unresolved. Despite awareness by program distributors, this problem has persisted, with digital technology both exacerbating it and providing solutions for it.

Managing A/V sync consists of four basic elements: specification and design of equipment and systems, synchronization measurement, correction, and operational diligence. Specification requires a mind-set to plan and manage the issue in new and existing infrastructures. Equipment is available that can measure A/V sync, either out-of-service (using flash-and-beep or similar technologies), or in-service, using watermarking or fingerprinting.
