EBU BroadThinking 2013 - the state of the art rendezvous for OTT and Hybrid TV // DAY 2 & DEMOS Report

EBU BroadThinking 2013 - the state of the art rendezvous for OTT and Hybrid TV // DAY 2 & DEMOS Report | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Nothing was more welcome after day 1 of EBU BroadThinking 2013 than a good night of sleep, in order to reset the tech hype counters and make some mental room for two new sessions on broadcasters’ CDNs and the latest advances of hybrid platforms. What would be the best broadcasters’ CDN architectures today, what would be their smartest (green) evolutions, would CDN-Federation standards finally bring interop reality over hopes, what would be the most advanced deployments and future of HbbTV, how it compares with YouView in the UK : day 2 agenda was looking quite attractive – and indeed the presentations were packed with valuable informations and experience feedbacks.

So here is the recap of the most interesting DAY 2 presentations and a short report on some insightful demos that were playing on the EBU floor right to the conference.

Nicolas Weil's insight:

Final part of the report : have a good reading & don't forget to attend the event next year !

YouView Boxes Are Like London Buses...

YouView Boxes Are Like London Buses... | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

You wait years for one, then three arrive at once….

So YouView has finally launched, and having waited for years for our first box, there are now three different ones to play with down at iBurbia Studios. We have a plain old vanilla one, bought in John Lewis; a BT Vision one; and a TalkTalk one. This allows us to finally get our hands on the things and to ask some of the pressing questions. Namely, is it any good, is it important, and will it succeed?

YouView delayed again

YouView delayed again | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

YouView, the hybrid television platform planned by British broadcasters and broadband service providers, may not be ready until the end of 2012. The repeatedly postponed project will apparently now not roll out until at least the fourth quarter of the year. By which time, it may be too late to make an impact on the market.

The Sunday Telegraph, referring to a senior source, reports that Lord Sugar, who was appointed as non-executive chairman of the venture, did not think the project was in good enough shape to show to the public, beyond limited test groups.

The marketing and public relations team left the process six months ago and were not replaced. The project appears to have been operating in radio silence and a general media blackout since then.

Freesat’s new HTML5/HbbTV-based platform to rival YouView

Freesat’s new HTML5/HbbTV-based platform to rival YouView | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Freesat has developed Free time using widely adopted European open standards, including HTML5, OIPF and HbbTV, which Strickland said would make it easy for third parties to launch on the platform. “HTML5 gives us an edge. It’s a low barrier to entry for broadcast and broadband partners, and offers a gateway to people developing those kinds of services.”

YouView billed as the future of UK free-to-air

YouView billed as the future of UK free-to-air | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

A backwards-facing EPG may not be unique but it is rare and the seamless movement between broadcast and on-demand programming sets YouView apart from nearly all other Connected TV platforms. It is a hugely powerful concept and Richard Halton, CEO of YouView, demonstrated how easy it is to go backwards in time, click on a show and launch an on-demand session. A day/date timeline at the top of the guide and shading are used to distinguish the past from the present/future.

For the BBC, YouView is considered a good investment. “We have a track record of investing in platforms that make cutting edge technology available to as many people as possible,” Mark Thompson, Director General at the broadcaster, declared. He pointed to the clarity and simplicity of the YouView offer as defining features, plus the sophistication of the technology and the enormous amount of content that will be available. “This is a very compelling platform and the BBC is proud to be a part of it,” he added.

YouView may not be the only game in town

YouView may not be the only game in town | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

With YouView just around the corner there should be a sharp focus on hybrid broadcast broadband (HBB) services in the UK next year, and if the marketing is anything like as successful as it was with Freeview then the concept of on-demand content on TV, and backwards facing EPGs, should become well understood by many more consumers. But YouView is far from being the only game in town and it could even face competition from the existing free-to-air (FTA) platforms in terms of attracting those viewers who primarily just want some catch-up TV content or even some specialist linear channels on their living room set.

It is widely expected that the ISPs behind the YouView project, TalkTalk and BT, will provide set-top boxes to their broadband customers, which is a logical extension of the model BT already uses to bundle BT Vision (hybrid Freeview DTT and IPTV) with existing services. And while YouView could represent a good value alternative to Pay TV, or provide a toe in the water for free-to-air homes that want some additional content, it still has to force its way into a market that is well catered for in terms of the primary service on offer: free-to-air linear TV.
