Fraunhofer Shows Low-Bandwidth MPEG Surround at CES

Fraunhofer Shows Low-Bandwidth MPEG Surround at CES | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Visitors to CES and the Detroit Auto Show can sample 5.1 surround sound streamed at only 64 kbps bandwidth. That’s because those are the two locations where Fraunhofer is publicly debuting its MPEG Surround audio codec.

Surround sound audio typically takes 160- to 400 kbps for a stream, notes a Fraunhofer representative, but with MPEG Surround the requirement is far less. That gives content providers the ability to stream to new locations, such as cars using a 3G connection.

While this sounds significant given the hundreds of thousands of DLNA certified TVs, tablets, smartphones, Blu-ray Disc players, media streamers, and game consoles already sold, the standard requires at least one DLNA Premium Video certified device in the home.

Multi-Screen To Join Big Screen At International CES

Multi-Screen To Join Big Screen At International CES | Video Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Most of the noise in Las Vegas this January is expected to come from new advances in IP connectivity in many 2012 step–up models, and how online video services and apps will now tie together TVs with handheld smartphones and tablets to further the burgeoning multi–screen entertainment experience.

Also expect to hear more news on the rollout of the UltraViolet initiative, which promotes a virtual content locker system that allows consumers to purchase a movie or video program on a Bluray Disc (for ex– ample) in the traditional way, and also get access to that title via their handheld devices through streaming portals, downloads and digital copies. International CES will also be the showcase for the launch of next–generation Mobile DTV devices that will now be equipped with back–channel connectivity to allow user authentication for video–on–demand services and viewer metering.
