Ten Things To Know about Today’s Music Biz

Ten Things To Know about Today’s Music Biz | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Nick DeMartino recently moderated 2 music panels at Digital Hollywood:  "There were two panels with two discussions (music & YouTube; music and social), but truthfully, this is an ongoing conversation in which music is the canary in the coal mine – trends we see now in music are trends we’ll see throughout the digital media ecosystem."

Nathan Berghout's curator insight, May 9, 2015 2:27 AM

Because the music industry is changing so much, it has become even harder to "become" someone. There is no longer just the radio and public exposure, now bands have to take social media and the internet into account when looking to get out there and make something of themselves.

The Fanthropology of Theatrics | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it

Nick DeMartino:  "The session was called "Unlock the Power of Fans" at Transmedia Los Angeles’ monthly meetup earlier this week, but I’ll remember it as the Fanthropology of Theatrics, because I learned so much about the way audiences are using the new collaborative storytelling platform that I was there to represent."

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Nick DeMartino takes us through Theatrics, the storytelling tool behind Beckinfield, Welcome To Sanditon, and Psych's The S#cial Sector.

A Startup Incubator For Entertainment?

A Startup Incubator For Entertainment? | Transmedia: Storytelling for the Digital Age | Scoop.it

Nick DeMartino:  "Historically, content hasn't been seen as having a predictably "scalable" business model. Content remains a hit business, whether distributed in analog or digital form, and the ability to repeat a success has proven to be illusive over time. Perhaps, that is changing, given the blur between content, technology, social, and audience"...

Transmedia sorting hat

The famous Harry Potter sorting hat. It’s a fitting metaphor for this presentation, as I sort through the emerging history of transmedia storytelling.

“Isaac Newton didn't discover gravity, he just named it,” one TV writer-producer quipped during a recent conversation about “transmedia.”

And so it would seem, despite a testy flame war over the term transmedia –– or perhaps because of it –– the “transmedia” movement is catching on across the media business.

The Digital Rocking Chair's insight:

Nick DeMartino:  "For the past couple of years I’ve been asked to contribute to year-end round-ups of the year in media, curated by transmedia producer and blogger Simon Staffans. I’ll post the link to the 2014 edition in a subsequent post, but for now, here’s a version of his questions and my answers."

Peter Gutierrez: "Although DeMartino is not himself an academic, he’s a top consultant specializing in digital production/distribution (which includes transmedia, naturally), and has clearly devoted a lot of time to considering transmedia’s broader ramifications… especially those that relate to the K-12 world."

A website that presents an ongoing sci-fi series about the town in a format unlike any TV you've ever seen...

Each one of us generates vast amounts of data — emails, phone calls, social networking, photos, text messages, videos, browsing, purchasing and more.

Our data create a new form of identity, what you might call a Virtual Self – a concept that will determine the future of the web.
