FirefoxOS Phones Are For Sale Right Now In Spain [Updates] | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

A new mobile operating system premiers this week. Phones with the brand new FirefoxOS are officially for sale in Spain – and coming to countries around the world soon.

Spanish mobile operator Telefonica is now selling the ZTE Open for 69 euros, and it isn’t exactly a powerhouse. Sporting a 3.5-inch 480×320 touchscreen, a 3.2MP camera, 256MB RAM, and 512MB internal memory alongside a bundled 4GB microSD card, it’s not an iPhone killer – and it’s not supposed to be. The idea for this pay-as-you go phone is to offer a simple, affordable alternative to Android and iOS devices.

The operating system, and apps for it, is built around HTML5. Apps developed for FirefoxOS work on any phone, and don’t even need to be installed in order to run. It’s for this reason the operating system can offer what it calls “Adaptive App Search”, which shows you apps relevant to almost any query, which you can open and use in real time – no installation required.
