Read this Book: Making Science @DianaLRendina | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Over the summer of 2021, I collaborated with our 6th grade science teacher as part of a grant to find ways to incorporate makerspace activities into the curriculum. (Look for posts coming soon about some of the projects we did).  Part of our work was reading the book, Making Science: Reimagining STEM Education in Middle School and Beyond.  I found it to be a fantastic, practical resource for bringing hands-on maker learning into the classroom.  Reading this book as a maker librarian gave me a ton of ideas for new ways to collaborate with our STEM classes.   And it’s an excellent resource for classroom teachers as well.

Starting a #Makerspace from Scratch: Introducing The IDEAlab & Makerspace - Diana Rendina @DianaLRendina #makered | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
The IDEAlab &  Makerspace is my school’s space for creative exploration in our library.  But not too long ago, the room was the librarian’s office and a storage space (it’s still my office too).  Before I was hired in the summer of 2017, plans were in place to transform the room into a virtual reality laboratory.  Cabinets were removed, desks were installed and computers with VR headsets were setup, as well as a 3D printer. A whiteboard and interactive projector were mounted on the wall, allowing airplay from Apple devices (the school is 1:1 iPad) or projection of students individual computer screens, making it easier for more students to observe VR.  The name IDEAlab (Innovate Design Explore Apply) was chosen. So on my first day, the IDEAlab already existed. But the makerspace was yet to come.

Assessing Learning in Maker Education - Edutopia

Assessing Learning in Maker Education - Edutopia | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
On the surface, maker education looks like a lot of fun—young people tinker with materials, take things apart, make things light up, design and build things, etc. It’s messy, a little scattered.

Dig a bit deeper, and those actions of play reveal quite a lot of thinking, processing, and meaning-making. Manipulating materials helps us understand how to best use them, how they can be altered or used differently; taking things apart or making things light up allows us to examine the made world, helps us form connections between what we see and what’s just below, and presents the possibility of discovering or creating something anew; and designing and building asks us to understand the products, structures, voices, and systems around us, find an opportunity to improve or change, test our assumptions, and more.

#Design #Thinking Process and #UDL Planning Tool for #STEM, #STEAM, #Maker #Education - @JackieGerstein #makered | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

"If there is a makerspace in your school, it may be down the hall, in the library, or in another building. If there is someone other than the teacher managing the makerspace or there is a schedule for the school, your kids may only be able to use it once a week or month. Some makerspace activities may be focusing on how to use the resources available and may not be connecting the activities to the curriculum or around a real world problem. If this is how the makerspace is set up in your school, then your kids may not have access to the resources, materials, and tools when they need them, especially for STEM or STEAM.

In deciding what resources you need based on the learners you have, you may first need to determine how your learners learn best, what projects you plan to do, how you can set up a makerspace in your classroom, and much more. This is why we decided to create a planning tool for makerspaces in the classroom for you using the Design Thinking Process and Universal Design for Learning®."

Automatic Solder Fume Extractor | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Health

Automatic Solder Fume Extractor | #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Health  | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Fume from soldering iron can be very harmful to our health. Most of the cheap solder contains lead. Lead is a dangerous metal, and it can cause severe damage to our health even cause cancer. Usually, solder has 60% lead and 40% tin. So it is very toxic to our bodies. Even lead-free soldiers are harmful to our bodies! Because they contain resin in their core. And resin is also toxic. Every type of solder is less or more harmful.

So people using soldering iron for a long time, are in big danger. I'm one of them. So, I search for the solution on the internet and find many kinds of solder Fume Extractor, but they all are boring. So I decided to make my own, Fume Extractor which is a little smart. It can detect the smoke coming from the soldering iron and then turn on the Fan to extract the fume.

Launched on IndieGogo a few months ago after 2+ years in development, Crowbits is a STEM education project that leverages both the Arduino and ESP32 boards, in addition to the BBC Micro:bit, to teach logical thinking and programming. Featuring Lego-blocks compatibility and a Scratch-like interface, the project has reached its IndieGogo backing goal and is ready to ship, says Crowbits' maker Elecrow.

Crowbits are little plug-and-play blocks that can snap together thanks to their magnetic Pogo pins, which makes it easy to connect crowbits with one another. Elecrow has already built 40+ different crowbits, including a DC motor, a buzzer, a LED, a gesture sensor, and many more. In addition to input and ouput modules, you also have programmable micro-controllers and IIC/UART modules.

Now a new Australian university research study on makerspaces in primary school settings reveals the compelling evidence of benefits of this type of learning for primary educators

Creating an Authentic Maker Education Rubric

Creating an Authentic Maker Education Rubric | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
While many teachers are excited about the maker movement and may even be creating projects for their classrooms, assessment can be puzzling even to veteran classroom teachers. How can teachers prove that deep, rich learning is occurring through making? How do we justify a grade to students and parents alike, especially to the student who "just isn’t good at art"? By crafting a three-part rubric that assesses process, understanding, and product, teachers can rest assured that they are covering all the bases.

Learning About Young Makers | MakerED | MakerSpaces | eSkills | Challenges | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Conclusion

Even though these weeks were considered a maker education summer camp, there was an expectation from the school and parents that the learning activities incorporated the expectations and rigors of a classroom environment. I could easily identify cross-curricular state and common core standards even though I never taught to THE standards. Never during the sessions were the young learners formally testing, asked to be quiet or sit still, or asked to finish quickly so we can move on. Yet, I believe each of the kids would say that they learned lots . . . . and had fun doing so.

Young makers are more capable than what people (adults) typically believe.

Instead, the making learning activities were structured to honor natural ways of learning along with developmentally appropriate practices. Sadly, it appears that some of these natural ways of learning were “conditioned” out of the young learners through more formalized education as I identified in my observations.

Incorporating making into a learning environment teaches lifelong learning skills such of perseverance, love of learning, working with others, and embracing challenges.
