Target, Amazon debut sustainable store concepts

Target, Amazon debut sustainable store concepts | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
With consumers prioritizing environmental sustainability, Amazon and Target unveiled stores that aim to use less energy than they produce, the retailers announced last week. Target's first net-zero energy store is located in Vista, California, and the new Amazon Fresh store, which is pursuing net-zero carbon certification, is located in Seattle.

The new Amazon Fresh Seattle location features a CO2-based refrigeration system, has steel byproducts to reduce embodied carbon and fully sources its electricity from the company's renewable energy projects. Target's store has solar carports, CO2 refrigeration and LED lighting.  Drawing from its experience, Target said it plans to add CO2 refrigeration to all of its stores by 2040. Amazon said that some of the upgrades will be used at all of its Amazon Fresh grocery stores going forward, such as the lower-carbon concrete flooring.

Three ways 5G is leading the fight against climate change

Three ways 5G is leading the fight against climate change | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Current global emissions targets will only be achieved through the acceleration of innovative technologies, enabling industries to pivot their organizations towards sustainable operations. Digital technology may be the most powerful, scalable tool the world has to tackle climate change and 5G is at the forefront of this effort.

Operators of wireless networks have already taken numerous steps to limit emissions, such as reducing energy consumption, switching to more efficient network equipment, and sourcing renewable energy. However, offsetting the growth in data volumes over mobile networks will require more than improvements to current networks.

The impact of 5G is threefold in its potential to combat the effects of climate change: 5G, with its substantially greater energy efficiency, will reduce greenhouse gases, abate the emissions of other industries, and enable more precise monitoring of our environment to help meet broader climate change commitments.

The Depths of the Unseen Ocean

The Depths of the Unseen Ocean | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

"The depths below the ocean’s surface comprise a staggering 95 percent of the Earth’s living space, and much of it is unexplored by humans. To put into perspective just how deep the oceans go, this XKCD comic, (hi-res image).  Most of the ocean doesn’t even see sunlight. Even scientists aren’t familiar with everything that’s down there."

Graphene Paint to Power our Homes?

Graphene Paint to Power our Homes? | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Scientists from the University of Manchester have discovered a material which combines graphene, a one-atom thick layer of graphite, with the transition metal dichalcogenides.

Something straight out of a science fiction film is fastly becoming an exciting reality as scientists from the University of Manchester have discovered a material which combines graphene, a one-atom thick layer of graphite, with the transition metal dichalcogenides. The material is thin and flexible, and it can absorb sunlight to produce electricity at the same rates of existing solar panels. This could be potentially used to coat the outside of buildings to generate power required to run appliances inside.

The material is composed of transition metal dichalcogenides layers sandwiched between the two outer layers of graphene. The graphene acts as an extremely efficient conductive layer, and the TMDC acts as a very sensitive light absorber.

Researchers have found that the 'light absorption characteristic' of the material can be increased when the graphene layer is sprinkled with gold particles. The material has a quantum efficiency of 30%.

Researchers believe that entire buildings could be powered by coating their exposed surfaces with the panels. Further, the energy produced by the panels could be used to alter the transparency and reflectivity of windows and fixtures.

This type of graphene material could be used to form on the outside of the buildings to generate power required to run the appliances inside. It is flexible and easy to use.

Not only can graphene paint be used to power objects, the material will also be able to chaneg color.

Researchers also believe that the graphene base substance has the ability to create a new generation of hand-held devices such as smartphones that can be powered using sunlight. These devices can be made ultra-thin, transparent and flexible.

Research suggests that there can be a high level of optimism regarding the development of graphene in the near future.

They hope that the material can be used for a wide range of industrial and day-to-day applications, providing potential technological breakthroughs in the areas, right from electronics to telecommunications and energy generation.

Apparel carbon reduction plans 'not credible'

Apparel carbon reduction plans 'not credible' | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Only a third of companies have credible carbon emission reduction plans in place - with apparel among the worst offenders, according to the CDP intitiative.

The non-profit, which runs the world's environmental disclosure system, said more than 13,100 companies disclosed their plans to mitigate climate change last year.

However, only 4,002 had developed a low-carbon transition plan and just 135 - fewer than one per cent - reported on all 24 of the CDP's key indicators of a credible plan.

Towards A Sustainable Future: A Fashion Perspective

Towards A Sustainable Future: A Fashion Perspective  | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Sustainability- a buzzword thrown around by fashion insiders, but what exactly does it mean? Sustainability, in simple terms, means to sustain something over a long period of time. As a policy, sustainability concerns itself with economic, social, and environmental betterment. When narrowed into fashion, sustainability means taking socio-economic and environmental-friendly approaches to the production, distribution, and consumption of fashion products.

Cost saving benefits of a Sustainable Supply Chain

Cost saving benefits of a Sustainable Supply Chain | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it
Reduced environmental impact
At the heart of sustainability is the environment and how it can be protected. But often there’s a misconception that this comes at a cost. To highlight the benefits of an eco-friendly supply chain, let’s take a look at what French dairy producer Danone has been able to achieve.

In Evian-les-Bains, Danone worked with local authorities and farmers to convert 40,000 tons of organic waste into natural fertiliser while also producing biogas to provide power for 1,200 inhabitants. The organic waste helped to avoid contamination of spring water and ensured that farming continues without disruption or damage to the environment.

The switch from traditional farming to organic practices can see a 20% dip in milk production. But in the long term, the benefit of being able to sell at a higher price is realised, while using fewer resources keeps costs down and profits high.

It all forms part of Danone’s vision to be carbon-neutral across the full supply chain by 2050, something which will benefit the environment, the brand, and the profit margins.

Nuclear bomb tests reveal definitive evidence of brain regeneration in humans

Nuclear bomb tests reveal definitive evidence of brain regeneration in humans | Daily Magazine | Scoop.it

Nuclear bomb tests carried out during the cold war have had an unexpected benefit. A radioactive carbon isotope expelled by the blasts has been used to date the age of adult human brain cells, providing the first definitive evidence that we generate new brain cells throughout our lives. The study also provides the first model of the dynamics of the process, showing that the regeneration of neurons does not drop off with age as sharply as expected.

In mammals, most types of brain cell are created at or soon after birth and are never renewed. But studies in rodents and monkeys have shown that in two regions new neurons continue to be created even in adulthood – the hippocampus, which is involved in learning and the formation of new memories, and the olfactory bulb, which processes smell.

However, there has been some controversy over whether the same is true for humans. Fifteen years ago a study found evidence for such neurogenesis in adults up to the age of 72 (Nature Medicine, doi.org/b7hjfz), but the research relied on a chemical called bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) to label neurons. BrdU was used at the time to track the spread of tumours in people with cancer, but it was banned shortly after and so the study was never repeated, leading some researchers to question the results.

The new study settles the debate. "The existence of adult hippocampal neurogenesis in humans is not arguable this time," says Sandrine Thuret at King's College London, who was not involved in the work.

Instead of chemical labelling, Jonas Frisén at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues used a by-product of the above-ground nuclear bomb tests carried out by the US, UK and Soviet Union between 1945 and 1963. As a result of these detonations, atmospheric levels of the radioactive isotope carbon-14 increased dramatically during this period. It has decreased steadily since.

Carbon-14 enters the food chain and eventually finds its way into our cells, which integrate carbon-14 atoms into their DNA when a parent cell splits into two new daughter cells. The amount of carbon-14 in the atmosphere is therefore mirrored in the cells at the time they are born.

By analysing brain tissue using mass spectrometry equipment, the team was able to measure the number of carbon-14 atoms trapped in different populations of cells in different brain regions.

They could then compare this figure to known data for atmospheric levels of carbon-14 to date the birth of a cell in different people to within about a year. The level of carbon-14 is higher in older cells grown closer to the peak of nuclear bomb testing than in cells born more recently.

Frisén's team previously used this method to show that humans are the only known mammal in which neurogenesis does not occur in the adult olfactory bulb, since the cells in this brain region were the same age.
