3 Simple Secrets to Motivating People

3 Simple Secrets to Motivating People | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

One of the key roles any leader plays is finding ways to motivate your team to reach your organization's goals. But the secret to motivating people is, wait for it .....that you can't do it. I have studied this issue by talking to and working with thousands of people over many years and the one thing everyone can agree on is that you can't motivate someone to do what they don't want to do.

What you need to do instead is find out what people want and then show them how they can get it. Motivation is intrinsic. People get excited about pursuing a goal when it's in their own self-interest. As a leader, the trick is to see if you can find an alignment between what your people want and what will help grow the organization. The upside is that if you can tap into the underlying desires people have, you will get amazing performances in return from them.

Motivation is more intrinsic than extrinsic, as such, the key role of a leader is to try to make people align their goals with the what will make the organisation grow.

The Mind of the Constant Learner

There are three distinct mindsets that allow new employees and leaders to become constant learners: the Gamer Mindset, the Beginner Mindset, and the Growth Mindset. Knowing all three can provide a framework that throws your personal switch to “LEARN” when you need to rapidly adapt and get to work.

"One of the central features of high quality project-based learning is the pedagogical relationship between the Driving Question and the “Need to Knows” that stem from it. In the video below I use the Explain Everything app to show how teachers and schools, using a process of rich inquiry, can leverage great thinking and learning by flipping how you approach the concepts behind Bloom’s Taxonomy."

Main findings

"The key finding of the study is that a common conceptual approach at European level, capable of supporting the development of digital capacity in educational organisations, is both desirable and attainable.

The DigCompOrg framework has seven key elements and fifteen sub-elements that are common to all education sectors. There is also scope for the addition of sectorspecific elements and sub-elements. For each of the elements and sub-elements of DigCompOrg, a number of descriptors were developed (74 in total). Diagrammatically, the elements, sub-elements and descriptors of DigCompOrg are presented as the sectors of a circle, with an emphasis on their inter-relatedness and inter-dependence."

#HR Using Design Thinking to Embed Learning in Our Jobs

#HR Using Design Thinking to Embed Learning in Our Jobs | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Since we now expect learning to be as simple and compelling as watching YouTube, hundreds of video-based content providers and MOOCs offer free bite-sized content for us to consume on our phones while sitting in the coffee shop or standing in the subway. But corporate learning management systems remain slow, hard to use, and difficult to maintain. They’re getting in the way of employee development instead of supporting it.

At the same time, the demand for learning is greater than ever: Bersin by Deloitte’s latest research with Glassdoor shows that learning and career opportunities are the biggest drivers of employees’ willingness to recommend their company as a great place to work for people under age 40.

Did You Just Hear That Millions Is Wasted On Ineffective Training?

Did You Just Hear That Millions Is Wasted On Ineffective Training? | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

In the past fortnight, CIPD released their Learning and Talent Development Survey 2013. The survey results show that 74% of organisations in the UK currently use eLearning, but only 15% report that it is one of the most effective training methods available to them. I suspect the numbers are similar around the globe.

So how much of an organisation’s training budget is spent on the development of eLearning? Recent IBIS research shows that $26 billion is spent globally on eLearning or 13% of all training expenditure. Why are so many organisations continuing to invest in eLearning modules if it is not the most effective way to train their people? The same CIPD study also found that only 31% of organisations reported that most employees completed an eLearning course. Immediately the true cost of that “cost-effective” eLearning module exploded. How can the ROI be justified to any CEO or CFO?

The Learning Factor's comment, May 14, 2013 4:29 AM
Great comment David. I agree that eLearning can offer some benefits when it part of a complete blended learning solution. I guess the survey shows that too many organisations are relying purely on an isolated module and they are then disappointed when they don't see change/improvement they require.
Jessica V Allen's curator insight, May 28, 2013 12:43 AM

After exploring the ineffective nature of asynchronous learning (think Moodle and LMS) the author proposes that synchronous learning (webinars for example) are the way to increase participant retention AND reduce cost.  When thinking of creating a culture of PD in your school, what questions does this research uncover?

Envisioning Future Learning: Social #Networking and Beyond

Envisioning Future Learning: Social #Networking and Beyond | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
In the future, if not now, we will get the bulk of our outside information from social media. It will (and has begun to) take the place of the news networks, doing their job for them. Witness news programs that highlight the latest viral YouTube video as a segment in itself.
How can social networking be redeemed for in-classroom use? Does it even need to be?
Certainly, strict supervision and filtering tools are in order, but are not fail-proof. Still, we don’t always give the idea of collaboration through the digital medium enough credit.
The fact that we as a generation are grappling with the pitfalls of social networking creates even more of an urgency for us to teach our kids “how to do it right.” That’s where digital citizenship comes in.
