#RRHH Managing Millennials: Maybe the Problem Is You, Not Them #HR

#RRHH Managing Millennials: Maybe the Problem Is You, Not Them #HR | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

I found myself in an online conversation recently with a number of friends and fellow small-business owners. The topic was the difficulty of getting good employees.

Someone had offered the story of an entrepreneur who sneered about the people who worked for him. They were all lazy, had no sense of work ethic, and were a waste of time. There was nothing to be done until the "kids" changed their attitudes. What a bunch of entitled whiners, right?

I doubt it. What a ridiculous amount of whining from someone who wouldn't do his job. Every business owner has a responsibility to help employees develop and succeed.

In the debate over how to manage Millennials, one important point gets lost: Developing younger employees takes work and that's your job.

How Millennials Became Convenient Scapegoats for a Changing Society

How Millennials Became Convenient Scapegoats for a Changing Society | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
It seems a reader can barely go a week without seeing at least one news headline about how Millennials are "killing" some industry or product. Generation Y is purportedly wiping out casual dining, golf, diamonds, homeownership, and bars of soap, among other consumer products; news items have also characterized the generation as lazy, vain, and always looking for a handout.

According to Philadelphia-based writer (and Pacific Standard contributor) Malcolm Harris, this hand-wringing disdain toward Millennials unfairly ignores the material conditions that created the generation. In his new book, Kids These Days: Human Capital and the Making of Millennials, Harris argues that Millennials have set themselves up for success (Harris' book notes that Millennials are the most educated generation) with very little payoff. Millennials carry most of the burden of the nation's $1.4 trillion student-loan debt crisis; their unemployment rate is more than double the national average; they earn 20 percent less than Generation X; and Millennial employees face a higher level of depression than any other generation. Negative stereotypes, Harris argues, point to the economic and sociological forces that have shaped Millennials, not characteristics endemic to the generation itself.

Strong Female Lead

Strong Female Lead | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Coming of age for working women in the "lean-in" era isn't easy. For millennial women (those born between 1980 and 1994), life and work are blended. The same technology that makes staying connected so easy makes staying "on" after working hours easy as well. Meanwhile, businesses expect more work for less pay, and parenting challenges are leading many women to take more time off work.

That helps explain why 34% of millennial women say they aren't interested in becoming a boss or top manager, according to a Pew Research Center study. Like their male counterparts, millennial women place a higher value on security and flexibility than on pay. But that doesn't mean they're satisfied with their working lives. In fact, 75% of millennial women say gender inequality in the workplace is an issue that needs addressing, compared with just 57% of millennial men. Here's a look at some of those obstacles and what millennial women can do to get past them.
