How Lifelong Learning and a Growth Mindset Can Propel Your Career

Many people believe once they’ve earned all the degrees needed for their dream job, their learning days are over. This is a dangerous way to manage a career, because technologies and business models emerge and force change so rapidly.
The pace of change is accelerating, and to succeed in any industry, and to be ready to participate in the next evolution of it, professionals must adopt habits and practices that empower lifelong learning.

One challenge to lifelong learning is that many people assume they are not capable of it or not good at it. We tell ourselves, I’m not a math person. I don’t get code. Writing is not my strong suit. Remarks like this may mask a feeling that learning itself is beyond our grasp.

Lifelong learning never happens without a healthy dose of personal grit. A short, but powerful word, grit means persevering in the face of challenges and adversity. Gritty individuals are motivated to overcome those obstacles — whether in their personal or professional lives.

#HR Why millennials see the 10-year work anniversary as a personal failure

#HR Why millennials see the 10-year work anniversary as a personal failure | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Job-hopping millennials are getting older. Unlike previous generations of young people who eventually settled into a company for long-term financial security, the generation born between 1982 and 2004 isn't taking the bait, a new survey shows.

"It's much easier to talk about your own growth and career trajectory if you express it as a literal journey between companies, rather than what you did at any one company," said Mac Schwerin, a 27-year-old copywriter who has changed jobs three times in as many years to get promoted. "It's easier to make the claim that you are the common denominator, that you are the one bringing successes with you wherever you go."

Most of his peers agree. In a survey of millennials by Deloitte, two-thirds said they hoped to be working for a different organisation in five years or sooner. Deloitte polled 7500 working college-educated professionals in 29 countries for its fifth annual Global Millennials survey.

#HR #RRHH How To Turn Your Career Envy Into #Motivation

#HR #RRHH How To Turn Your Career Envy Into #Motivation | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Here are fives ways these experts suggest reshaping your career envy into something good.

1. Never Assume Luck

Everyone’s acting as their own best public relations specialist. Just because their star seems to rise effortlessly, doesn’t mean their path was devoid of sacrifices.

Reaching out to someone you admire--and yes, envy a little--is empowering and enlightening for both sides (and chances are, they never saw themselves as someone to envy!). Find out their process, and what unique challenges they had to face on their way to where they are. They likely made their own luck, or had a mentor that changed everything.

2. Ask Yourself Why You’re Envious

Is Self-Doubt Holding You Back? 5 Ways To Build Confidence And Banish Doubt

Is Self-Doubt Holding You Back? 5 Ways To Build Confidence And Banish Doubt | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

The problem with self-doubt is that the fear it creates stops us from living the lives we most want and changing the things we don’t.  How?  Fear keeps us living small and stuck in jobs that don’t fulfill us but feel safe.  But is there really anything safe about living a life where you feel disengaged, disillusioned or desperate to be doing something else? of course not. The truth is that who you are is not your doubts. The key to banishing them isn’t to wish them away, but to take action in their presence.

It’s easy to mislead ourselves into thinking that if we just had the success we wanted, then we’d never doubt ourselves again and ooze the confidence we see in others.  But it actually works in reverse.

#RRHH #HR 5 Signs It's Time for You to Change Careers

#RRHH #HR 5 Signs It's Time for You to Change Careers | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Many people hate change; contemplating the unknown is scary. So many stick with familiar things even though they no longer fit. This is especially true of careers. Sometimes people get stuck in a career direction or work environment that makes them terribly unhappy, and they stay there because it's tough to change careers once you have gained experience, power, and good compensation.

People often end up in the wrong careers by accident. They start out with a job and become proficient, so they advance and make a good living. They may even start a company in that field. They get so focused on growth, meeting objectives, or making the money to support their lifestyle, they don't realize how toxic their life has become.

Sometimes you just end up following the wrong career path and it takes someone else to objectively point it out. Here are 5 signs you can identify on your own.

James Cracknell's curator insight, July 29, 2014 4:24 AM

Recognise any of these? - I felt many of them in my career but one that is not mentioned is guilt. Guilt that you are doing a job that many would crave for; guilt that you feel this way at all; guilt that you constantly keep asking that there must be more to life yet how would others that you love feel about a sudden urge to change?

How To Create A Career Bucket List

How To Create A Career Bucket List | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

If you’re always working for the weekend, you’re not alone. Just one-third of employees are actively engaged at work, leaving the majority of us unhappy on the job, according to the most recent State of the American Workplace Gallup poll. Instead of keeping an eye on the clock and the calendar, take the reins by creating a career that you love, experts suggest.

“People often find themselves on a lifelong career journey without a destination in mind, only to look back at some point and realize they are not where they expected or wanted to be professionally,” says Tom Kemp, MBA executive-in-residence at the University of Richmond’s Robins School of Business. “Often this reflection happens when they either find themselves confronted with a job loss or they simply become so disenfranchised that they quit with little idea or thought about what they want to do next.”

How To Get A Job In A Field You Didn't Major In

How To Get A Job In A Field You Didn't Major In | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

To graduate on time, you probably needed to declare your major by your sophomore year. But by the time graduation rolls around, it wouldn’t be surprising if your career ambitions have shifted to something outside of your major. Perhaps an internship didn’t turn out how you expected, or certain courses dampened your passion for the occupation you thought you wanted to pursue. So, now you’re in a tough spot, where your degree doesn’t quite line up with what it is you want to do.

The upshot? There’s no need to panic. "It’s natural for college students to change their career direction," says Donald Asher, author of How to Get Any Job with Any Major. Furthermore, employers aren’t as hung up on your major as you might think. "Once you step off campus, hiring managers care a lot less about what your major was," says Asher. "They care more about the fact that you have a college degree."

After you’ve secured a diploma, it’s time to convince a potential employer to hire you, regardless of what your degree is in. These five steps can help you start off on the right foot.

#HR #RRHH Multitasking Damages Your Brain And Career, New Studies Suggest | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

You’ve likely heard that multitasking is problematic, but new studies show that it kills your performance and may even damage your brain.

A Special Skill?

But what if some people have a special gift for multitasking? The Stanford researchers compared groups of people based on their tendency to multitask and their belief that it helps their performance. They found that heavy multitaskers—those who multitask a lot and feel that it boosts their performance—were actually worse at multitasking than those who like to do a single thing at a time.

It always seems the job you would love never comes with the pay you want.

Money is unfortunately a necessity that we all need in order to survive, and its significance causes us to make decisions and create goals that are derived from the idea of attaining wealth. It is often our primary motivator in life.

However, if we look back at the most successful people in the world, their motivation and drive had less to do with money than one may think. And this surprisingly enough is often what enabled them to succeed.

When considering a new job, it is important to ensure the grass will truly be greener on the other side.

While working for a new employer often helps an employee's career, it can also be a detriment. A new study from Spherion Staffing Services revealed that long-term career advancement doesn't always happen by moving from one employer to another, but rather by staying with one company.

Specifically, 63% of workers said that long-term career advancement depends on staying with an employer for a long time. Additionally, 61% of workers today said that changing jobs every few years usually damages a person's long-term career prospects.
