Precision is the first type. known as tactical performance. It is about rules, checklists, and standard operating procedures and then following them closely. The other is adaptive performance, is how effectively your organization diverges from its strategy. It manifests as creativity, problem solving, grit, innovation, and citizenship. It is how organizations adapt to VUCA - volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, where technology and strategy changes rapidly. …[It when] Starbucks barista adapt their greeting to make you feel personally welcome, or an engineer lean over to help a colleague solve an unexpected problem.

Both types of performance are needed in today's world, yet despite leadership and change training programs, precision is over-emphasized, and creativity and adaptability is often suppressed or deselected in hiring.

The US Army coined the acronym VUCA in the late 1990s to depict the radically different military threats that arise when conditions are ‘volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous’.
 
These four words have subsequently been adopted in the workplace, as they neatly encapsulate the turbulent and unpredictable nature of today’s business environment. If your organisation is to survive and thrive in a VUCA world, you need to rethink the way you develop your leaders.

Understanding VUCA and how it is used as a framework to help leaders navigate the modern world.
 
The term VUCA, an acronym of Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous was originated by the American military to describe extreme conditions during warfare. VUCA has more recently been adopted by an increasing number of CEO’s and organizations as a framework to approach different types of challenging situations bought about due to external factors such as politics, economics, society, advancing technology and the environment. To provide insight on the relevance of VUCA for today’s leaders, and to highlight the importance of having the ability, skills and mindset to lead in VUCA world, this blog piece aims to provide an understanding of the term, by providing examples of each element.

I joined Emerging World in March 2016, coming from the medical device industry. As with most new roles in different industries, I was welcomed with a whole host of new acronyms to learn and understand. An acronym frequently used is VUCA, a term I was not familiar with. A VUCA world is pivotal to program design at Emerging World, it is used to help leaders and organizations understand the world in which their business operates. In this blog, I share my learnings and understanding of VUCA.

So many of us struggle to change careers, to leave a bad relationship, to go back to school. In my social circle, I can think of just two friends who are notably good at change; the rest (myself included) tend to freeze up when we consider breaking with the past in a significant way. Neuroscientist Dean Burnett’s new book, “Idiot Brain,” addresses the ways our brains trip us up. I asked him why humans might be wired to resist making changes even when we say we want them.

“In an evolutionary sense, the brain doesn’t like uncertainty. Anything uncertain is potentially a threat,” Burnett says.

In talking to experts in areas including psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics, I found four distinct categories that tend to hold us back from making changes. I’ll cover each in a separate post, starting with the prospect of uncertainty: why we appear wired to pay a lot of attention to it — and sometimes to dread it.
