If you’re Irish they will almost certainly mispronounce your name. Worse, you’ll be expected to keep smiling when you notice all of these tiny humiliations because your publisher and your agent have insisted. It’s enough to make you dread the publication of a new book. But Emma Donoghue — having sold 2.5 million copies of her last novel Room — is now at a place in her career and life where being called on to humor others is not her top priority.
