By Request - Good Alternatives to Google Image Search

By Request - Good Alternatives to Google Image Search | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"This morning I received an email from a reader that has been frustrated by the results her students are getting when they search on Google Images. Rather than relying on the filters on Google Images to generate good results for students, give one of these other sources of images a try."

Beth Dichter's insight:

There are times when searching Google images you scratch your head and wonder how the images shown are relevant to the search term. Richard Byrne has come up with eight alternative sites that you may want to share with your students. Three are listed below with brief explanations, but you will find five additional sites and more information in his post!

* Morgue File - This site has 1000s of images as well as lessons on photography imaging and image editing. The images are free for education and commercial use. Make sure to check for attribution for each image as it varies.
 * Every Stock Photo - This site is a search engine. It searches for images that are in the public domain or Creative Commons licensed pictures. Search results show as images and when you click through you will find all the necessary information: a larger version, a link to the source and attribution information.
* Pixabay  also provides public domain images (but be aware that the top row of images are from other sources and require payment). You may search by keyboard or spend time browsing. To quickly download create an account. Otherwise you will have to enter a capcha code to download.

Catfishing & Google Image Search by Image | The Daring Librarian

Catfishing & Google Image Search by Image | The Daring Librarian | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

The Daring Librarian has released a new "comic" that describes how to upload images in a Google Image Search as well as why this information may be important to you. She not only presents the visual (part of which is above) but also provides some additional links, and may introduce you to some new words, such as 'catfishing' (which is not fishing for catfish!). Along with the how to search and why to search she also provides an infographic that provides statistics on Real vs Fake Facebook pages that is an eye-opener.

Google Improves Image Search Tools Menu

Google Improves Image Search Tools Menu | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Thanks to a Tweet from Matt Cutts, the head of the webspam team at Google, I learned that the tool bar in Google Images now includes "usage rights." Now instead of having to open the advanced search menu you can just click the "search tools" menu and select "usage rights" without leaving the search results page."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Google has just made it easier to find the 'usage rights' of images. Richard Byrne has assisted by providing us with a quick tutorial that show just what to do, in two steps!
