The 6-step guide to flipping your classroom - Daily Genius

The 6-step guide to flipping your classroom - Daily Genius | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
It’s one of the most talked-about trends in education right now. Right behind the iPad and Common Core. Flipping your classroom is a trend that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. That’s great, because it offers a lot of advantages for your classroom regardless of your students’ age or what subject matter
Beth Dichter's insight:

This infographic/visualization provides six steps that show how to flip a classroom. It also makes it clear that after you work through the six steps you must also review what has taken place, revise as necessary and then repeat.

The six steps are:

1. Plan

2. Record

3. Share

4. Change

5. Group

6. Regroup

But to understand what they mean by each of these you should go to the post. Flipping the classroom takes time, but today there are many locations where you can find great videos that will work for you. There are numerous tools available that help you create videos on your own, or take an existing video and add comments, questions, etc., so that it will meet your needs. If you are considering using video as a way to flip your class in the upcoming school year this post also provides links to additional resources that you may find helpful.

Who Would Choose a Lecture as Their Primary Mode of Learning?

Who Would Choose a Lecture as Their Primary Mode of Learning? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Given all the press around the Flipped Classroom, Khan Academy, and Ted-Ed, long overdue discussions around the use of lectures in the classroom have evolved.  Educators are questioning when, how, and what types of lectures best serve and address student learning.

Along with this development, research is being conducted with students about how they want to be taught and what they learn via a lecture model of education. For example, according to “Learn Now, Lecture Later,” a new report released by CDW-G, only 23% of students are satisfied with the way the teachers spend their class time."

Flipping The Flipped Classroom - Motion Infographics For STEM Learning

Flipping The Flipped Classroom - Motion Infographics For STEM Learning | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"At its simplest, a flipped format can involve a teacher inviting students to view YouTube videos at home as a preview to the day's topic. At its most rigorous, a flipped curriculum involves teachers writing, producing, directing, editing, and posting their own original lessons -- complete with custom narrations and visualizations -- via third-party applications."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Finding great videos that you may use in your classroom takes time. This post provides four videos with a STEM focus that you may choose to use in your classroom. These are often referred to as motion graphics. The ones within this post include:

The Solar System, Our Home in Space is "an infographic trip through the wonders of the solar system" that allows students to explore the inner and outer planets;

* Measuring the Universe, which combines math and scale and helps students begin to comprehend how vast the universe is;

* For the Love of Mountains, where you will learn more about some of the "extremes" of the earth's mountains;

* Forest (the English version), a "study in ecology and the environment.

I find videos are a great hook for students, providing opportunities for them to quickly engage with the subject and begin to ask questions as they want to learn additional information. These four videos would work with a wide range of ages and are well worth checking out.

Before Reading or Watching Videos, Students Should Experiment First

Before Reading or Watching Videos, Students Should Experiment First | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
A new Stanford study shows that students learn better when first exploring an unfamiliar idea or concept on their own, rather than reading a text or watching a video first.
Beth Dichter's insight:

What is the best way to flip a classroom? Perhaps it is not showing videos first, but allowing the student to experiment first and then watch videos or read material. This study shows that students experimented first had substantial improvement in performance.

This study used a specific "new interactive tabletop learning environment, called BrainExplorer, which was developed by Stanford GSE researchers to enhance neuroscience instruction." Based on the use of this environment students did better exploring first. The experiment is described and data is shared in this article and it shows that the group who experimented first had a significant improvement in their final score.

There is an explanation as to why they chose the field of neuroscience as their goal (quoted from post below):

“Part of our goal,” the researchers write, “is to create low-cost, easy-to-scale educational platforms based on open source, free software and off-the-shelf building blocks such as web cameras and infrared pens so that our system can be easily and cheaply deployed in classrooms.”

The article also notes that this 'many educational researchers and cognitive scientists have been asserting for many years: the “exploration first” model is a better way to learn.'

Flipped Learning: Going Beyond the Obvious | The Thinking Stick

Flipped Learning: Going Beyond the Obvious | The Thinking Stick | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"...I'm a big believer in the "Flipped Approach" not because it's new, it isn't, not because it's about lecture...because it isn't, but because it has educators talking and thinking about new ways of teaching....and that is aways positive...

Why can't, what we'll call a flipped approach, move to include ownership of learning for the students?

...To me the flipped approach is about thinking deeply about how we use the time we have with students. Maybe "flipped" is the wrong word...but it's the word of the moment so if that's what it takes to create change that's what I'll use.

I constantly talk about one simple question that everyone should be asking themselves:

What is the reason we get together face to face?"

A different view on a "flipped classroom" and well worth the read.
