Mocomi Offers Hundreds of Short Video Lessons for Kids

Mocomi Offers Hundreds of Short Video Lessons for Kids | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Mocomi is a nice website featuring educational and entertaining content for elementary and middle school students."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Mocomi is a website geared to elementary and middle school students. Along with videos they have a wide variety of activities in areas including the arts, civics, culture, English, environment, geography, history, science, and math. They also have an online magazine with a specific theme. The current one is called Under Water, and you can access 19 additional magazines online.

This might be a site you use with students, or one that they might explore during free time. Richard Byrne suggests that the videos "are a model of animated informational videos" and students in middle school and high school "could follow the model to create their own short videos to demonstrate their understanding of a topic."

The Early-Literacy Shift: New Words, New Media, New Friends

The Early-Literacy Shift: New Words, New Media, New Friends | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Literacy is changing. It really is. Even in my grade one classroom as the students begin to learn their letters and sounds, as they start to put those letters and sounds together into words, and as they take their first hesitant steps to read and write —literacy is changing.

The change in our classroom was subtle at first. When my students began writing the word we with two i’s, I smiled and talked about the more traditional spelling of the word. When students came to school with a clear understanding of what it meant to get to the next level or to have several lives, I took notice of the new vocabulary they had."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Putting young students together with technology creates a win-win situation in this classroom. Learn how one teacher has her students writing in blogs to share their work, using twitter, learning vocabulary (such as pingback) and much more. This post is complete with a video where students provide definitions of words and share how they use technology in their classroom.

Anxiety Attack: Conquering the Fear of Math – SchoolBook

Anxiety Attack: Conquering the Fear of Math – SchoolBook | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Two professors say we've got to stop sending messages to young children — especially girls — that math is something to fear. Humans are actually hardwired to think mathematically, they say.
Beth Dichter's insight:

At what age to learners experience fear of math? This post notes that "common wisdom" said that it not until sixth grade, but current research "demonstrates that children as young as first grade report math anxiety symptoms" and that the anxiety "affects their ability to learn math."

Learn more about the negative impacts of math anxiety as well as strategies that may be used to help learners.

Laura Jane's curator insight, December 16, 2013 2:03 PM

As Ms. Dichter already stated, this article draws an interesting comparison between our belief that math anxiety doesn't start until sixth grade with the overwhelming reality that we're seeing symptoms of anxiety as early as first grade. This SchoolBook article gives an interesting example, a 7-year-old girl named Zoey, who excels in reading, but struggles in math. The pressure that her parents put on her largely contributes to her anxiousness. The article gives a multitude of ideas for how to combat math anxiety, even beginning as young as first grade. Constantly providing reassurance, demonstrating patience, and exhibiting that it's okay to not get something on the first try are all suggestions that I hope to implement in my own classroom.

Oh Noah! | Learn Spanish with Noah - PBSKids | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Oh Noah!, (formerly known as Noah Comprende) is designed to teach Spanish to children ages six to eight through animated videos with embedded games that help build vocabulary. In each three-minute video, a misunderstanding launches a comic misadventure. Kids learn language better when they can put it into meaningful context. Although – like Noah – they may not understand all the Spanish dialogue, kids can comprehend the story told through rich visual storytelling, much like a silent movie."

New! Digital Citizenship Song and Video

New! Digital Citizenship Song and Video | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Something you may not know about us here at Common Sense Media, is that quite a few of us are former classroom teachers! When we develop new materials, we always have our favorite memories to guide us. One thing we remember fondly is being amazed by how music transformed a classroom – kids would jump to their feet, whatever the song, to sing and sway while the teacher subtly wove word play and pattern recognition into the mix."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Here is a new resource to help teach elementary students about digital citizenship. Thanks to Common Sense Media for putting together a song and video with lyrics that teach students that they should "Pause and Think" before they go online. The website states that this song "stresses the connection of safe, respectful, and responsible behavior online and offline."

The website provides a the song (downloadable or viewable on YouTube) as well as a file that includes posters that you may post and has each lyric.

Common Sense Media also has a poster about digital citizenship for elementary school students. This poster "illustrates how kids can use their heads, hearts, guts, arms, and legs to be a good digital citizen" as does the song.

Young children love to sing and need to learn about digital citizenship. Take a few minutes to check out these resources and share with others whom teach the younger grades. You may hear a new song in your school!

10 Surprising Ways to Spot a Great Video Game | Common Sense Media

10 Surprising Ways to Spot a Great Video Game | Common Sense Media | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"What your kids look for in a snack might be different than what you look for as a parent. While they focus on taste, you focus on nutrition. Same goes for games. Glitzy, big-name games can be enticing, just like junk food. Some are flashy and addictive but do little to feed kids' curiosity or help them develop.

But truly great video games can help your kids grow in ways you never thought possible -- just like delicious, healthful food. So how can you avoid the sugar-cereal equivalents in the game world? Read these 10 tips to find out."

The first tip, draw your kids in, is followed by a brief explanation and two video games that would tend to draw your kids in. In this case the games are for ages 10+ and 12+, but other tips have suggestions for younger and/or older kids.

The Algebra Problem - How to Elicit Algebra Thinking Before 8th Grade

The Algebra Problem - How to Elicit Algebra Thinking Before 8th Grade | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"It’s Crazy Hair Day at Marshall Elementary School in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood—which is perfect, because Tufts University researcher Bárbara Brizuela has brought a hat.

In the stovepipe style and made from oaktag paper, the hat is one foot tall. Brizuela then asks, “If I’m five and a half feet tall, how tall will I be with the hat on?” Second-grader Jasmine, smiley in a pink sweatsuit, answers, “Six and a half feet.” Rather than say, “Right!” Brizuela offers another question: “How do you know?”

Thus begins a math conversation that researchers like Brizuela believe may hold the key to tackling one of our biggest school bugaboos: algebra."
