Teaching Ethics in the Age of Technology

Teaching Ethics in the Age of Technology | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Ethical decision-making should be included as a 21st century skill (overused term but don't know of an alternative).  Some would profess that ethical decision-making has always been a needed skill....
Beth Dichter's insight:

In this post Jackie Gerstein states that ethical decision-making is a skill needed today. Technology is advancing at a speed that is often beyond our comprehension and our understanding of how this technology may impact our future may not yet be known. After looking at why it is important to integrate ethical decision-making into the education of young people she shares a resource that "can be used as a source for ethical dilemma discussions in middle school and high school classes."

Some of the ideas suggested include:

* The Right to Privacy versus the Right to Know

* Internet Access as a Human Right

* Neuro-enhancements

She also shares some recent court cases related to online behavior that students might be interested in analyzing.

Teaching ethical decision-making helps students use critical thinking skills, focuses on Bloom's higher order levels, and provides additional skills discussed in the post. As always she provides additional resources.

Daniel Diaz's curator insight, August 1, 2018 11:04 AM
Ethics has been underestimated since it is believed that ethics is already integrated in education; however, it is obvious that society is way more complex that it was before since technologies brought new problematics that must be faced right now. Unfortunately, they cannot be solved because a sort of incompetence exists towards it. For this reason, ethics and moral should be taught way more explicitly than it was before.

How to Create YouTube Photo Slideshows - A Good Alternative to Animoto

How to Create YouTube Photo Slideshows - A Good Alternative to Animoto | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Animoto is an excellent tool for creating audio slideshows. But there are some limitations to it that some teachers don't like. Most notable of those limitations is the time limit (30 seconds unless you get an Animoto for Education account), lack of space for text, and that students have to remember a username and password to use it. The YouTube slideshow tool provides a tool for creating audio slideshows without those three limitations of Animoto."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you are looking for an alternative to Animoto to use with students to create photo slideshows check out YouTubePhoto Slideshows. YouTube allows you to create videos up to 15 minutes in length and you may specify how long a slide is shown. There is also an annotation tool to add text. For those folks whom use Google Apps for Eduation students already have a user name and log-in. Richard Byrne provides directions (with screen shots) to walk you through the process.

Heather Ramsey's curator insight, April 12, 2013 12:52 PM

This page shows how to use YouTube for slideshows so that they are longer and more accessible to students that other sites like Animoto. I had no idea that YouTube had this capability. In my district, YouTube is blocked on campus computers (I'm sure many others can sympathize) so I would need to work around that if I had students using this in a lesson. Recently I began to use SlideRocket to create video lessons so that I can incorporate audio narration and the link is not blocked by the district's web filter. SlideRocket could be used for a slideshow as well, but it takes a lot more customizing than this YouTube method. This blog has a ton of other useful information too. Kudos to the writer!

Two big mistakes in thinking about technology in education

Two big mistakes in thinking about technology in education | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Slate magazine has been running several articles on education this week, including two today that are of interest. This one by Konstantin Kakaes is worth looking at more closely, if only because it somehow manages to gather almost every wrong idea about technology in education in existence into a single, compact article."

Talbert critiques the article 'Why Johnny Can't Add Without a Calculator' making the point "Technology neither improves or diminishes learning. It’s the instructional design choices made and instructional practices used by individual teachers with individual students that do this."

An Idea Whose Time Has Come

An Idea Whose Time Has Come | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
When it comes to technology, the perception is that it is the least important area in which to invest precious funds. This is why the time is now to seriously consider developing a Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) initiative.

29 Games Kids Can Play to Try Engineering -FreeTech4Teachers

29 Games Kids Can Play to Try Engineering -FreeTech4Teachers | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Try Engineering is a site that hosts lesson plans and games designed to get students interested in engineering. The lesson plans, 114 in all, are arranged according age and engineering topic. The lesson plans can be downloaded as PDFs."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This site has great information on engineering, including 29 games that students may play. The majority of games are geared to students in elementary and middle school (although some would work in high school). With STEM becoming a push in many schools it is great to find sites like this that provide a range of resources.

7 Key Findings for Successful Education Technology Integrations | Emerging Education Technology

7 Key Findings for Successful Education Technology Integrations | Emerging Education Technology | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Have you heard of Project RED (hint - RED stands for revolutionizing education)? They have "conducted a national survey of educational technology that focused on student achievement and financial implications."

There are seven key findings. These are listed below and additional information on each is in the post.

1. Nine key implementation factors [that] are linked most strongly to education success.

2. Properly implemented technology saves money.

3. 1:1 schools employing key implementation factors outperform all schools and all other 1:1 schools.

4. The principal's ability to lead change is critical. Change must be modeled and championed at the principal level.

5. Technology-transformed intervention improves learning.

6. Online collaboration increases learning productivity and student engagement.

7. Daily use of technology delivers the best return on investment (ROI).

Educational Technology Guy: 10 Technology Skills Every Educator Should Have

Educational Technology Guy: 10 Technology Skills Every Educator Should Have | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Overall, educators need to understand some basics about technology and that it is not a be-all-end-all solution to everything in a classroom. Technology can help teachers differentiate and provide new experiences for their students. Technology can also help students better understand a concept and provide extra help for them. Educators need to start with good pedagogy and lesson objectives and activities and then look for technology that can enhance those lessons, improve teaching and learning, and help students learn."
So what do you need? As well as listing ten specific skills links are included to help you learn/refresh the skills as well as a link to an article published earlier this year on "The How's, Why's and Value of Educational Technology. Below are three of the items listed...check out the article for the complete list.

The Innovative Educator: Dropping Out was a Great Idea

The Innovative Educator: Dropping Out was a Great Idea | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

This post is written by a student who chose to drop out of school. Quoting from the article:

"The good news is that it worked. I’ve developed a wide range of interests and skills, with my lifelong field of choice being software. I have a software development job that I love, I have no student debt, and I feel secure about my long-term future...

The bad news is that along the way, I discovered that public schools are not prepared to fairly compete for their students’ attention. This has resulted in a long series of slightly traumatizing events. From the prescription drugging, to the humiliation of being singled out from the rest of my peers, to the threats of litigation, it’s been a long road..."

Read on and allow this article to challenge some notions you may have.

10 Education Technology Implementation Pitfalls and Ways to Avoid Them | Emerging Education Technology

10 Education Technology Implementation Pitfalls and Ways to Avoid Them | Emerging Education Technology | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
With a little planning, many of these potential technology roll out and adoption issues can be avoided.

Failed or troubled implementations of instructional technologies can give the whole idea of ‘ed tech’ a bit of a black eye and result in bad experiences that may take years to forget and move on from. The fact is, technology implementations struggle or flat out fail every day, but the good news is that many of the shortcomings that lead to problems can be foreseen and circumvented.
