For Young Readers, Print or Digital Books?

For Young Readers, Print or Digital Books? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Print or digital? Adults grapple with which is the best way to read -- not only for themselves, but especially when it comes to their kids. Whether or not parents prefer print books over interactive e-books for their kids, the question is, what’s actually better for them?"
According to a recent study by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, "kids age 3 to 6 remembered more narrative details - "What happened in the story?" - from print books than from enhanced e-books with multimedia features."

However, this was not true when asking kids about the plot. Additional information is found in this post.

Apple's iPad Textbooks Cost 5x More Than Print : The Education Business Blog

Apple's iPad Textbooks Cost 5x More Than Print : The Education Business Blog | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

All the sweet promises Apple is making are going to slam headfirst into the funding issue. It will cost a school 552% more to implement iPad textbooks than it does to deploy books. That ain't happening in THIS economy. The press reports I've seen have completely missed this because Apple "hand waved" their way around it.

Bryan Kay's curator insight, October 22, 2015 8:12 PM

I chose this resource to inform me about the latest technology trends.

There are alternatives to Apple products, like Chromebooks that are just as good if not better in an educational setting.

Principals should be aware of costs and utilize tech as much as possible.

Every Platform Tells a Story: Transmedia has the power to make any topic more vivid and personal — The Digital Shift | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Transmedia "a form of, and an approach to, storytelling that boasts a range of potential curricular applications that applies to literacy and the content areas. Teaching with transmedia guides students through various media formats to provide an immersive experience that makes any topic or narrative more vivid and personal. an experience across various platforms."

A post that discusses ways to use transmedia in the classroom, with "transliterate questions that come into play" such as:

* Where does the story start? Where and how is it continued?

* How do I know which medium comes next as I “read” the story—or does the story need to be told in a linear sequence? Can readers dip into it at different points of their own choosing?

With a brief history of transmedia and links to some sites where transmedia is used you will come away with a better knowledge about transmedia (and the awareness that it is not "inherently tech-dependent."

Do E-Books Make It Harder to Remember What You Just Read? | Healthland | TIME.com | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

I received a Kindle for my birthday, and enjoying "light reading," in addition to the dense science I read for work, I immediately loaded it with mysteries by my favorite authors. But I soon found that I had difficulty recalling the names of characters from chapter to chapter. At first, I attributed the lapses to a scary reality of getting older — but then I discovered that I didn’t have this problem when I read paperbacks.
