Beth Dichter's insight:

Once again SHIFT Learning has published an article that focuses on eLearning, but is applicable to face2face learning. The five mantras that are discussed work in either location. What are they? (All are quoted below):

* Think visually.

* We don't remember data, we remember stories.

* Design smarter, not harder.

* Visual clutter is the evidence of a failed search for clarity.

* Leave your learners feeling inspired.

Additional detail is provided in the post and an additional resource is shared in three of the five areas listed above.

8 Steps To Great Digital Storytelling - Edudemic

8 Steps To Great Digital Storytelling - Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Stories bring us together, encourage us to understand and empathize, and help us to communicate. Long before paper and books were common and affordable, information passed from generation to generation through this oral tradition of storytelling. Consider Digital Storytelling as the 21st Century version of the age-old art of storytelling with a twist: digital tools now make it possible for anyone to create a story and share it with the world."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This post not only provides eight steps to help you create digital stories, it provides resources for every step along the way.

After a brief look at why digital stories the post provides six ideas of what makes a great digital story. They "are personal, begin with a story/script, are concise, use readily available source materials, include universal story elements and involve collaboration at multiple levels."

It continues by providing a detailed look at each step which include ideas of ways to work with students in each step plus there links to many resources throughout the post.

Digital storytelling is a great tool to use with the Common Core standards, and this post will provide you with great ideas and resources!

Librarians, Technology, And The New Literacies

Librarians, Technology, And The New Literacies | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"The role of librarians in modern schools is more crucial than ever. In an age of dynamic information and media streams, librarians are uniquely positioned to guide students in research and storytelling tools."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This post provide a look at the many literacies that we are responsible for teaching, and although it i geared towards librarians the concepts apply to teachers across the disciplines.

Today we no longer define literacy as reading and writing. The types of literacy continue to grow and include (but are not limited to) visual, information, technological, scientific, critical, mathematical...the list goes on.

If you are looking for a short list of benefits of using technology tools, a look at how storytelling and research help students learn, or more information in the area of the new literacies in general check out this post.

Hall, Mercer and Russac, Patricia A.(2013). Librarians, technology and the new literacies. The ASIDE blog _Innovation Design In_underneath everything is information. Retrieved from http://theasideblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/librarians-technology-and-new-literacies.html
Librarians are poised to be on the front lines in delivering instruction and resources to help in understanding various literacies. They often know whole school curriculum and have the capacity to enrich daily lessons and educational units. When librarians shape information in well-conceived, visual ways, students can become motivated, self-directed learners who create their own content and publish their own work.

Transmedia: A new instructional literacy

Transmedia: A new instructional literacy | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Storytelling is a powerful way of making learning stick. Moving from canned instruction to a narrative engages learners and helps them connect what’s being taught to their own mental models... Transmedia uses different types of media to tell a story so it also sometimes goes by the name “cross-platform storytelling.” Transmedia audiences immerse themselves in narratives that exist in parallel media universes and can dip into different expressions of a story, exploring this character’s perspective, or that setting’s context and history.

Teacher's Guide to Digital Storytelling | Edudemic

Teacher's Guide to Digital Storytelling | Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Quite simply, digital storytelling is the act of using computer-based tools (desktops, laptops, tablets, cameras. and even smartphones) to tell a story. Used in the classroom, it is a lens that teachers and students can use to master the craft of storytelling and argumentative analysis. Digital storytelling might incorporate anything from storyboarding to script writing, revision, production and further editing."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Digital storytelling is a great way to introduce students to many skills. Students can learn how to create story boards, edit and revise their writing, select a digital tool and create a product.

This post from Edudemic provides a guide that you may find useful if this is new to you.

After introducing digital storytelling the post provides ten lesson ideas as well as additional resources.

There are a few suggestions I would add to this list.

One, the tool xtranormal, which is referenced in the second lesson idea, is currently not available. However, the good news is that another company has purchased the company and it will return.

For younger children a good tool to help create a digital story is Little Bird Tales. The website Storybird is also a great tool to check out and they provide amazing images that students may use to create their story. This site may be used with younger students as well as students in high school.

In the section for primary and secondary education you will find links to great resources at the University of Houston which has a site dedicated to "educational uses of digital storytelling" as well as a site from the National Writing Project that provides many resources.

A number of resources are also available in the section on higher education as well as as the section for business and creative professionals, which also suggests several Web 2.0 tools you might use to tell your story.
