21st Century Work: Career-Readiness Isn't What It Used To Be

21st Century Work: Career-Readiness Isn't What It Used To Be | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"

"The way we think about work is changing.

Thinking of jobs, careers, and pay is–by some–being replaced with the idea of work, relationships, and meaning. Technology and the resulting connectivity are a part of this. In the 21st century, we all have personal “brands”–digital footprints that precede and proceed us, leaving a record of our interactions and ideas for anyone to see."

Beth Dichter's insight:

How do we work today? What skills are needed? As we continue to move to a more global economy what are the skills that our students should have, and how do they differ from what we might call 20th century jobs?

This post begins to explore some of these questions, and provides access to a slideshare called Unlocking the Future of Work: Creating 21st Century Organizations that  are Innovative, Collaborative and Global. As you read through the slides you may find yourself questioning some of her ideas. You may also find new insights into how work is changing, which may lead you to make shifts in work you do with your students.

Creativity – the challenge of defining, developing and assessing it

Creativity – the challenge of defining, developing and assessing it | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Can you use formative assessments to assess creativity? This post by Mark Gleeson provides a look at an in-depth working paper "Progression in Student Creativity in School: First Steps Towards New Forms of Formative Assessments."

He states:
"Creativity is defined as one of the four 4Cs of  Learning and Innovation in 21st Century learning. This OECD Creativity working paper is an interesting start in working out how we can define, develop and assess this wide ranging ‘skill’ we call Creativity. On display in the image above is a protype assessment tool developed from much research as outlined in the working paper."

The image below shows that they have created "The Five Dispositions Model" of the creative mind: Inquisitive, Persistent, Imaginative, Collaborative and Disciplined. In addition there are 15 sub-dispositions that are tracked along three dimensions: Strength, Breadth, and Depth. The model has been tested and a link to the pdf is in the post (as is the paper through Scribt).

As we move towards the Common Core and creativity becomes a component that we should be addressing this paper may provide additional insights into ways to use formative assessments in this area.

How effective is brainstorming at your school? (Infographic/commentary)

How effective is brainstorming at your school? (Infographic/commentary) | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Does group brainstorming work? This post looks at this issue, working from an infographic and selecting key concepts in the infographic and expanding on them. Gleeson begins by discussing "the five biggest problems with Groupthink." The list is below and all are explained in the post. Please note that there the author of the infographic also explains their perception of what each of the phrases below means.

* Social Loafing

* Social Matching

* Production Blocking

* Lack of Attention

* Fear of Criticism or Rejection

Gleeson then provides a list of tips for effective brainstorming (again, this are listed in the infographic with definitions provided). The areas explored here are:

* Independently prepare

* Set a goal

* Have meeting facilitators

* Avoid criticism

* Encourage competition

* Try collaborative apps

In education we often ask our learners to brainstorm. This article and infographic provide some insights that you may not have considered in the past. To go directly to the infographic (in which case you will not see the post by Gleeson)

There are also a number of free collaborative tools that support brainstorming. One of the more robust tools that is free to schools is LucidChart.

10 Ways to Use Lucidchart Online Graphic Organizers in the Classroom

10 Ways to Use Lucidchart Online Graphic Organizers in the Classroom | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Lucidchart is the best free learning tool you’ve never heard of.  It’s an online diagramming tool that’s easy to use and supported by a for-profit company, so you don’t have to worry about us disappearing once you’ve built your lesson plans around us.

Not sure how to use a diagramming program in your classroom?  Here are 10 ideas from teachers and professors who are already using Lucidchart."

Beth Dichter's insight:

A great introduction to Lucidchart, a robust online graphic organizer that is free for educators (and their students) and allows students to collaborate on projects. A few of the ideas suggested in the post are below:

* Use Lucidchart as an alternative to Think, Pair, Share

* Brainstorm with  mindmaps (and have students collaborate, having each choose a different color if you want to follow them individually)

* Real time feedback on assignments

Remember, this is a free tool and the post provides great directions on how to set up your account and request it be upgraded to educational!

5 Instructional Shifts to Promote Deep Learning - Getting Smart by Susan Oxnevad - DigLN, edleaders, EdTech

5 Instructional Shifts to Promote Deep Learning - Getting Smart by Susan Oxnevad - DigLN, edleaders, EdTech | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Technology is a powerful tool for learning that can be used effectively to help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in school and beyond.

Susan Oxnevad provides a great visual to help understand the instructional shifts (and in fact, there are six shifts she discusses within her article).
She states "Students can develop transferrable knowledge and skills as they engage in learning experiences that require them to construct knowledge. In order to facilitate these types of deep learning experiences, an adjustment in traditional instructional practices is necessary. These ideas are supported by the Common Core State Standards."

CultureShift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered by Digital Learning

"Culture Shift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered by Digital Learning, examines the support that educators and schools will require to implement genuine teaching practices that are personalized for each student. Digital learning, the report argues, can be a major strategy for enabling teachers to meet varied students’ needs while also supporting necessary cultural shifts in teaching.

According to the report, learner-centered instruction is personalized, rigorous, and based on college- and career-ready expectations. It is also collaborative, relevant, and flexible, with learning taking place anytime or anywhere. A true shift to a learner-centered environment powered by effective technology requires a strong school culture that embodies, encourages, and focuses on the needs of each student, the report argues. Specifically, Culture Shift maintains that the integration of technology and digital learning, school leadership, and changes in the teaching profession are critical to the transition to this new culture."

Technology Integration Matrix from Arizona

Technology Integration Matrix from Arizona | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

This Technology Integration Matrix from Arizona allows educators to determine their level of technology integration: entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion and transformation with "five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments:active, collaborative, constructive, authentic, and goal directed" creating a matrix.

Each cell provides two lesson plans, focusing on two these three grade ranges: K - 4, 5 - 8 or 9 - 12. Although the lesson plans are written for Arizona Common Core Standards are also referenced so others may find valuable information within this matrix. This site takes you to the interactive version that provides the lesson plans. A pdf version is also available at http://www.azk12.org/tim/docs/AZK1031_Matrix_Print.pdf.

Using Padlet (f.k.a. WallWisher) across the curriculum

Using Padlet (f.k.a. WallWisher) across the curriculum | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Padlet has morphed into a full blown online interactive whiteboard, collaboration, presentation, lesson management system with massive possibilities for teaching and learning. Before demonstrating how I have used Padlet in the classroom in ways I couldn’t have in the past, I’ll give you a quick(ish) tutorial in how it works."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Why choose to use Padlet? Aside from the fact that is free, it does not require that register. Gleeson recommends that as a teacher you create an account so that all the "walls" you create are in one place.

This post provides detailed instructions on how to create a wall and includes two projects that he has done with his students.

If you have not checked out Padlet I suspect you will after you read this post!

Anne Sturgess's curator insight, May 7, 2013 5:17 PM

I'm using Padlet in a variety of ways, including gathering teacher and student ideas and for feedback about any shifts in practise related to the work I do as a Facilitator of Professional Learning for teachers.

Write Better with Draft - A New Collaborative Writing Tool

Write Better with Draft - A New Collaborative Writing Tool | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Write better with Draft. Easy version control and collaboration to improve your writing.
Beth Dichter's insight:

A new collaborative word processing program is now available...Draft. This is quite a bit different than Google Docs, and has some features that may convince you to give it a test drive.

When you collaborate on a document are you frustrated that others may make changes to your document, and it is at times difficult to find the original version. Draft has you accept or reject each change that is suggested.

You may also "mark versions" of your work and compare them.

Draft is not as robust as Word (or Google Docs) but it is a simple word processing program that has additional features not mentioned here. As far as I can tell it is free at this point, but there is one feature, called Ask a Professional" where you can send off your document and get help. From what I have read there will be a fee for this.

1. You enter a problem.
2. You enter ideas that could solve the problem.
3. Some ideas lead to new (hopefully smaller) problems.
4. When a problem is solved, the tree gets green.
A problem is considered solved, when you found an idea that does not lead to a new problem.

How Collaborative Learning Is Shaping The Future of Education | Edudemic

How Collaborative Learning Is Shaping The Future of Education | Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

What will have the greatest impact on American higher education in the next ten years? Think of two long-standing exponential trends: the explosive rise in processing power and perhaps the even faster rise in information-sharing – a trend most pronounced in social networks. With strong demand for innovation in the university environment, a rise in collaborative, digitally-integrated educational technologies is likely to make education more affordable, more efficient and more relevant to our future workforce.
