Best Websites for Teaching & Learning 2014

Best Websites for Teaching & Learning 2014 | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"The 2014 Best Websites for Teaching & Learning foster the qualities of innovation, creativity, active participation, and collaboration. They are free, Web-based sites that are user friendly and encourage a community of learners to explore and discover."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Yesterday I posted the top choices from the American Association of School LIbrarians (AASL) on the best apps for 2014. Today they listed the top websites in the following categories:

* Media Sharing

* Digital Stories

* Manage & Organize

* Social Networking & Communication

* Content Resources

* Curriculum Collaboration

As you review the websites you will find one or more standards that are addressed by the websites.

Although I know many of the websites, there are some that are new to me that I look forward to exploring. Below are several that I have used and really like, or are ones I have checked out and will be using in the future.

Are you looking for new tools and want ideas on how to use them as well as examples and links to learn more about the tool. Check out Remix-t, a site from the University of Notre Dame, that is chock full of great ideas and resources. Although this site is geared to college teachers the resources and examples will provide you with great ideas and you will be able to modify them for your classroom. You will find in under Content Resources.

Mixed Ink is a new site to me. It allows you to create a group of students who will write together. They may comment and evaluate the submissions and each students' writing will show up in a different color. This looks like  a great site, esp. for schools that are not using Google apps.

There are many more that I will be exploring. Do you have a favorite website? Share them in the comment section and let us know why it is a favorite of yours.

7 Online Tools for Creating Charts & Diagrams | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Richard Byrne shares seven free tools to help create graphs and charts. Check out the list below and click through to the post for additional information on each tool.

* LucidChart - available free to schools and also as a Google app

* Google Fusion Tables - a spreadsheet app that allows you " to create visualizations of data set comparisons"

* Hohli Online Chart Builders - allows you to create "a variety of charts for online display"

* Infogr.am - " an online tool for creating interactive charts and graphs to use in interactive infographics"

* Better World Flux - this was created for the World Bank and "allows users to create animated visualizations of development data"

* Gapminder - also allows for data visualization and provides a page for educators

* Haiku's Deck Web App - Haiku Deck continues to add new features and now provides the ability to create graphs and charts

As always it pays to check out each tool and determine which you think will best meet the needs of your class (and that may be a choice of more than one).

The Best PowerPoint Alternatives for Creating Great Presentations - The Digital Shift

The Best PowerPoint Alternatives for Creating Great Presentations - The Digital Shift | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"We’ve all endured “death by PowerPoint.” It’s a painful experience for the audience and probably not all that fun for the presenter either. To help my students deliver effective presentations—free of those deadly bullet points—I have my go-to applications."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Richard Byrne shares alternatives to PowerPoint with a twist. He includes additional tools that help students outline their stories; find high quality images that are public domain and/or Creative Commons; and a variety of web-based presentation tools as well as Haiku Deck, and app for the iPad.

In total he shares eight resources providing links to all as well as short descriptions.

Michael Kleven's curator insight, May 22, 2013 4:15 PM

This isn't directly related to film production. Still, we all are called upon to make presentations. Some great resources here. Perhaps even helpful for producers, directors, DoP's.

Good ideas to help students add interest.

Five new(ish) presentation and publishing alternatives

Five new(ish) presentation and publishing alternatives | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"PowerPoint is robust and Google Presentations is very sweet for collaboration, but some of us simply crave beautiful new design options for our presentations and publications.

Here are four worthy options, and another one about to be born."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Do you like trying new tools, specifically ones designed for presentations and publishing? This post, by Joyce Valenza, explores five tools that will provide a range of options for you to consider.

* Canva allows you to create slides, posters, flyers, presentations, business cards and more. With hundreds of fonts, one million images, photo editing, the ability to collaborate and more you may want to head over to Canva and create an account...and it is free!

* LucidPress comes from the same folks that created LucidChart, and it is free for educators (and your school can also get accounts for students). This is a robust a robust publishing tool that has been getting rave reviews...definitely worth checking out. If you have questions, check out their tutorials.

* emaze is a new tool out in beta. The website states that you can choose a template and quickly create a presentation. Feature include the ability to translate text, HTML5 (so it should run on any browser), and multi-device accessible.

*Haiku Deck was originally designed for the iPad but is now has a web based version. The folks who designed this were looking for an application that would allow them to create a "killer pitch deck" and when they could not find one they chose to create one...thus Haiku Deck.

* Powtoon Slides is due out later this week. Based on a sneak peek you will find lots of slide templates, infographic style that includes animated icons that you can use on graphs and charts, a photoshow style (with over 3 million royalty free photos available), and an animated style. This list does not include all features but it may make you want to head over to Powtoon and check it out!

More information on these tools is available in the post.

3 Presentation Tools Teachers Are Now Using - Edudemic | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Presentations are more than just Powerpoint or Keynote. While those presentation tools will get the presentation-making job done, there are definitely better options out there.
Beth Dichter's insight:

A look at three presentation tools that you might want to use.

* Haiku Deck is a free app that allows you to create presentations with slick graphics that they provide or you may use your own. They will soon be releasing a web-based app so head over to their site to sign up for it.

* Projeqt is another web-based presentation tool. It has an easy to use interface and you can bring in materials from a range of sources.

* Google Presentation allows for collaboration and much more. Google continues to add features including a range of templates and the ability to easily share.

Which one is right for you? Check them all out and determine which would best meet your needs. Have fun exploring!
