Why K-12 schools are failing by not teaching SEARCH | The Thinking Stick

Why K-12 schools are failing by not teaching SEARCH | The Thinking Stick | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

A look at the importance of teaching students how to search. Do your students (or faculty) know how to find information online? Do they have use appropriate search words, understand how results are generated, use multiple resources, to assess the information (quality and accuracy), recognize bias?

This post focuses on some of the  information from the recent Pew Report that looked at "How Teens Do Research in the Digital World." The author also provides links to articles he has written on how to use Google to teach search to students in K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.
I would also suggest teaching with search engines beyond Google. If you are concerned with tracking check out DuckDuckGo or Blekko. A great metasearch engine is Carrot2. And you can use want to compare websites side-by-side check out Slikk.

Are you concerned that Google knows everything you search for online? Protected Search prevents Google from being able to see what you search and what sites you visit. The new service, built from the popular GoogleSharing service, helps put you back in control of your online privacy.

The Wall Street Journal published an article "Keeping Google from Watching Your Searches" that discusses Protected Search and it states that currently this works with Firefox. The article is at http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2012/03/01/keeping-google-from-watching-your-searches/

SearchReSearch: A new feature on Google Search Results Page

SearchReSearch: A new feature on Google Search Results Page | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Google just launched a really great addition for the Search Results Page (SERP).
For most sites, there is now a gray "site information" target next to the green URL."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Google now provides information on sites when you do a search (with a caveat...this is not yet happening with all sites but does seem to show up with with sites that are larger). Although some may know these sites for many students this information may help them determine the validity of the site. Hopefully this feature will continue to pushed out to assist students in evaluating websites.

30 Innovative Ways To Use Google In Education

30 Innovative Ways To Use Google In Education | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"As the search engine that’s become its own verb, Google’s success is difficult to frame.

One of the most telling examples of their gravity in search is how few legitimate competitors they have. (Some would say they have none.)"

Beth Dichter's insight:

When you ask students what search engine they use the answer tends to be Google...and their tendency is to look at the first four or five results (this is from my experience with students).

This post provides a look at "innovative ways to use Google search in the classroom...[with] the intended outcome [to be] the students sustained ability to self-direct and manage the search process as the digital universe continues to evolve."

What are some of the ideas? Read below and then click through to the post to learn of others.

* Locate 3 sources of information that support an idea, and rank them in terms of their credibility.

* Have students record immediate but brief think-alouds for why they choose to click on certain search results while skipping others.

* Defend or critique the process of Googleing entire questions (versus simply Googleing key words and phrases).

Consider picking a number of these ideas and using them with students in your class this year...and share with other teachers in your school. It is not only students whom need to upgrade their search skills.
