Water Footprint of an American | The Nature Conservancy

Water Footprint of an American | The Nature Conservancy | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

Today is Earth Day and this inforgraphic shares information about water. Why choose water for Earth Day? Think about the drought in California and how it is impacting people, and crops. Water is seen as a finite resource (although there are scientists at work figuring out how we might be able to make water).

This infographic focuses on the US and how much water we (we being Americans) use, specifically in the following areas:

* The amount daily, not just for drinking but to "grow and make the things we eat, wear and use to generate energy."

* The top eight crops that use water

* The top eight river basins, plus what happens when the water level drops below critical levels

Additional resources are provided under the infographic. Students are fascinated by  nature, and this infographic could be used to have students think about how they use water in their household, and how your school uses water.

Nature's Engineers – Google Green

Nature's Engineers – Google Green | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"This Earth Day, we’re celebrating something close to our hearts, engineers. Whether it’s a towering aspen or a tiny mushroom, nature has plenty to teach us. We're taking a look at six of our favorite outdoor innovators to see how we can follow their lead and treat the earth better."

Beth Dichter's insight:

For Earth Day this year Google has created a website "looking at some of our favorite engineers from nature to see how they can teach us to treat the environment better...see the beauty and ingenuity of the natural world through photos from National Geographic. We also want to provide easy ways to be greener in our own lives, so this site shows us how we can all be like those organisms by taking simple actions to care for the environment." (This quote is from Google's official blog.)

The images are amazing and you can "visit" two sites, South Africa, home of the "smart eaters", more commonly referred to as elephants and the Great Barrier Reef, home to the "ride sharers", also known as remora fish.

Highlights include an animated video from Loop Scoop using orange juice consumption to teach about biodegradation, a lesson tracking waste in neighborhoods from America Revealed, and a QUEST video transporting viewers to the beginning of the environmental movement."

Beth Dichter's insight:

If you are looking for some great resources to help your students learn more about the environment this list of 22 interactive lessons may be right up your alley. The lesson plans are for students as young as Kindergarten up through Grade 12. All are from PBS and all come with materials to use in conjunction with the interactive activities. PBS does require that you create a user name after you access two items but you may also create and save items in a favorite files for future use.
