Literary delight: Poetry comes to life at ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival - The Express Tribune

Literary delight: Poetry comes to life at ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival - The Express Tribune | Design | Scoop.it
KARACHI: I walk, I run, I go up and down, I scream, I wail, I fall, I rise then collapse, Bleed… And I black out.

Mahmoud Darwish’s poem Dice Player, was depicted as a poetry film by a young Egyptian filmmaker Nissmah Rashdy. The live recitation of the poem combined with the animation of Arabic typography and rotoscoped dance moves led the audience in awe of the journey of man shown in the movie.

The movie was shown at the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival held at The Second Floor on Friday. The screening was a part of the Goethe-Institut project, ‘Poets Translating Poets.’

“Poetry and films are like zebra’s white and black stripes, fitting together wonderfully,” said Goethe-Institut director Stefan Winkler. Speaking about the festival, he said that it is held every two years. “In 2012, around 870 films from 63 countries entered the poetry film festival. The festival was last held in 2014,” he said. Six poetry films on a wide variety of topics were screened during the event.

Ruth Lingford innovatively depicted Philip Larkin’s poem, The Old Fools. The poem narration, by Irish musician and political activist Bob Geldof, was combined with digital art to show the advent of life and death.

Another short movie, directed by Antonello Faretta, Just Say No to Family Values, based on the John Girono’s poem was also featured. It was followed by Of Burning Hills directed by Jason White. The film was based on a poem by Canadian author and the writer of the Booker prize winning novel The English Patient, Michael Ondaatje.

The Norwegian film Love is the Law was the penultimate offering while the Swiss-German production Cony’s Pony, directed by Robert Pohle and Martin Hentze based on Gabriel Vetter’s poem was the last film of the evening.

Literary connection

‘Poets Translating Poets’ is a forum for poets from Germany and South Asia to connect with one another. German poets translate works of contemporary poets from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The project aims to stimulate a transcultural appreciation of the works of emerging literati and form new literary networks. The project is connecting more than 48 poets through literary meetings in South Asian countries.

The works of two Urdu, two Sindh and two German poets, who met during a five-day workshop in Karachi, will be shared on Monday.

The work of Urdu poet, Afzal Syed Ahmed and Ali Akbar Natiq, Sindhi poets, Attiya Dawoord and Amar Sindh, and German poets, Daniela Danz and Andrea Altman, will be shared during a panel discussion on November 16 at The Second Floor. The poets met during a five-day workshop in Karachi, translating each other’s works.

No need for translation in the universal language of kissing

No need for translation in the universal language of kissing | Design | Scoop.it
Yep, we’re going to kiss and tell.

A smidge or so ahead of Valentine’s Day, it’s all about kisses: lip-smacking, tin-foil peeling, hit-song singing, phrase-making kisses.

Without getting, say, chapped lips, we cannot possibly chatter away about all of the kiss-related topics — the science of the kiss, the emotions, the reasons, and so on.

Rather, we’re tapping into a Top 10 Kiss List.

1. Famous kisses.

Which ones come to mind immediately? Going for romance, we’re going with the kiss scene in Gone With The Wind. We’re giddy that the rakish Clark Gable, who played the dashing Rhett Butler in the 1939 American epic historical romance film, was an Ohioan. Seems to somehow bring us closer to the King of Hollywood who, in GWTW, swept Scarlett O’Hara into an embrace and then kissed her with such passion that she most certainly was a kook to carry a torch for Ashley Wilkes. Another famous kiss, this one worthy of a patriotic salute to the U.S. of A...the sailor who was kissing a nurse in the famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photo taken in Times Square on V-J Day.

2. Kisses and song titles.

“A Kiss To Build a Dream On” by Louis Armstrong; “A Little Kiss Each Morning” by Rudy Vallee (oh, you youngins’, don’t do “Rudy who?” on us); “Baby Let Me Kiss You” by King Floyd; “Kiss on My List” by Hall & Oates; “Give Her a Great Big Kiss” by New York Dolls; “Give Him a Great Big Kiss” by Shangri-Las; “Haul Off and Kiss Me” by Caroline Aiken; one of our all-time faves, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” by Mel Carter, and a flourish of floral, “Kiss From a Rose” by Seal.

3. Candy kisses.

We adore the chocolate kind, and we blow a delicious kiss toward Hershey, Pa. We’re oh, so way beyond just the plain chocolate kiss. And we ask: Does anyone take the time to pull that slender piece of paper? No, didn’t think so. Find the fastest way to peel off the foil, and then savor the flavor. Hershey’s, by the way, encourages folks to Share the Love this Valentine’s Day with its latest version of Kisses: Chocolate Truffles. Too, you can give the bouquet that doesn’t wilt: clusters of Kisses crafted with Kisses and Hugs. The Original Hershey’s Kisses Brand Milk Chocolates have been a favorite American treat since 1907, according to the Hershey’s website.

This famous photo of a sailor kissing a nurse in New York's Times Square on VJ Day was shot by Alfred Eisenstaedt for LIFE Magazine.

4. The Customs of Kissing.

Debate rages over why, but many people smooch with their eyes closed. Some people, when greeting others at a party, prefer to “air kiss” rather than actually kiss skin-to-skin. And kissing cousins might not want to even air kiss, preferring a brief embrace.

5. Kisses in conversation.

Blow a kiss. Sealed with a kiss. You can kiss that raise goodbye. Do you kiss your momma with that mouth? Fish-kiss. French kiss. Kiss and make up. Kiss off. Kiss my dust. Kiss the porcelain throne. We’re a family newspaper so we won’t refer to “***-kissing.”

6. Kissing games played without real people or without the spin of a bottle.

Most assuredly, there are apps for that.

7. Things you kiss.

Winning lottery tickets. That new car you have always dreamed for and drooled over. A Pope’s ring. Four-leaf clovers. Frogs while searching for a prince. A daughter’s boo-boo after she scrapes her knee while learning to ride a bike. A sick son’s feverish brow. Blarney stones. Crosses. Solid ground after a turbulent boat or plane ride. Feet of dead rabbits.

As her mother, Chelsie Cornelius of Oregon, selected pumpkins last fall, 1-year-old Aubree learned close to kiss a barn cat at Fleitz Pumpkin Farm in Oregon.

8. The art or science of kissing.

It is formally known as philematology. Some scientists study the biology of kissing and the hormones involved; some people research why we kiss. A kiss has been described as a chemistry experiment to help determine if two people are compatible. You might make that first kiss sensual and sensational to create a great impression. However, people who study such smoochy stuff say kissing can provide sensory clues (taste, sound, smell) that can turn a first date into a red light or green light, or perhaps cautionary yellow.

9. First kiss.

Your newborn baby as your world changes forever. Your just-adopted puppy, your new best friend. The cute boy on the playground in elementary school. The smartest girl in English class, on the dance floor, at the junior-senior prom.

10. Last kiss.

The warm-with-love kiss on the cold face of your parent laid to rest in a satin-lined, flower-adorned coffin. Mom, Dad, whether it is Valentine’s Day or any other holiday or day of the week, you still have our hearts forever. You always will be our kiss of life.
