Atlanta pharmacist John S. Pemberton created Coca-Cola in 1886 as a medicinal product. Early advertising refers to it as a "Brain Tonic and Nerve Stimulant," a remedy for headaches, neuralgia, hysteria, melancholia and all nervous afflictions.
