How to transform schools into learning organisations? | #ModernEDUcation #LEARNing2LEARN  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Schools nowadays are required to learn faster than ever before in order to deal effectively with the growing pressures of a rapidly changing environment. Many schools however, look much the same today as they did a generation ago, and too many teachers are not developing the pedagogies and practices required to meet the diverse needs of 21st-century learners.

Geemik Maria Açucena Da Silva's curator insight, January 15, 2017 11:00 AM
"Based on an in-depth analysis of the literature and informed by a small network of experts, the paper identifies and operationalises an integrated model that consists of seven over-arching ‘action-oriented' dimensions which show how to transform schools into learning organisations: Developing and sharing a vision centred on the learning of all students. Creating and supporting continuous learning opportunities for all staff. Promoting team learning and collaboration among all staff. Establishing a culture of inquiry, innovation and exploration. Embedding systems for collecting and exchanging knowledge and learning. Learning with and from the external environment and larger learning system. Modelling and growing learning leadership. In short, a school as learning organisation has the capacity to change and adapt routinely to new environments and circumstances as its members, individually and together, learn their way to realising their vision."

In response, a growing body of scholars, educators and policy makers around the world is making the case that schools should be re-conceptualised as “learning organisations” that can react more quickly to changing external environments, embrace innovations in internal organisation, and ultimately improve student outcomes.

Despite strong support for and the intuitive appeal of the school as a learning organisation, relatively little progress has been made in advancing the concept, either in research or practice. This lack of progress partly stems from a lack of clarity or common understanding of the school as learning organisation.

It wasn’t too long ago that student use of “chatspeak” — texting shorthand, Internet slang, or even emoji — in the classroom seemed as if it might signal the end of grammar and the death of proper English. But with 78 percent of teenagers having access to cell phones, and the majority of children picking one up by age 12, chatspeak is here to stay.

Why Empathy Holds the Key to Transforming 21st Century Learning | #EQ #SoftSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Like other aspects of modern life, education can make the head hurt. So many outcomes, so much important work to do, so many solutions and strategies, so many variations on teaching, so many different kinds of students with so many different needs, so many unknowns in preparing for 21st Century life and the endless list of jobs that haven’t been invented.

What if we discovered one unifying factor that brought all of this confusion under one roof and gave us a coherent sense of how to stimulate the intellect, teach children to engage in collaborative problem solving and creative challenge, and foster social-emotional balance and stability—one factor that, if we got right, would change the equation for learning in the same way that confirming the existence of a fundamental particle informs a grand theory of the universe?

That factor exists: It’s called empathy.

Carol Dweck Explains The “False” Growth Mindset That Worries Her | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU

Carol Dweck Explains The “False” Growth Mindset That Worries Her | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
False growth mindset is saying you have growth mindset when you don’t really have it or you don’t really understand [what it is]. It’s also false in the sense that nobody has a growth mindset in everything all the time. Everyone is a mixture of fixed and growth mindsets. You could have a predominant growth mindset in an area but there can still be things that trigger you into a fixed mindset trait.

Something really challenging and outside your comfort zone can trigger it, or, if you encounter someone who is much better than you at something you pride yourself on, you can think “Oh, that person has ability, not me.” So I think we all, students and adults, have to look for our fixed-mindset triggers and understand when we are falling into that mindset.

I think a lot of what happened [with false growth mindset among educators] is that instead of taking this long and difficult journey, where you work on understanding your triggers, working with them, and over time being able to stay in a growth mindset more and more, many educators just said, “Oh yeah, I have a growth mindset” because either they know it’s the right mindset to have or they understood it in a way that made it seem easy.

A Quick-Guide To Teaching Empathy In The Classroom | #Understanding each other | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
By teaching students these skills in an authentic, applicable way, will they see each other differently? It’s worth finding out. With so many curricular and time restraints on teachers, how can we be expected to explicitly teach empathy in a meaningful way?

A Definition Of Empathy

Webster’s dictionary defines empathy as: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either in the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; also: the capacity for this.

LEARN

It’s no longer enough for teachers to get a credential and then sit back and teach the same content year after year.

Richardson says to be part of modern learning, teachers need to actively educate themselves about the context students live in and how they can improve as educators.

“There’s never been a more amazing time to be a learner,” Richardson said. “How are we in education not running towards that in our own personal lives and embracing that?”

It’s not just about connecting on Twitter with other educators or asking for professional development about technology. If teachers are waiting for a planned PD about something they are probably already stuck. “You have to have the disposition of an eight-year old to find your own learning,” Richardson said.

The Way We Learn Today Is Just Wrong | #ModernEDU #LEARNing2LEARN | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
So where is this all going?

The Future of Education – Personalized, Perfect & Free (Thanks to AI and VR)

Right now, online platforms like Khan Academy and Coursera have made a plethora of educational resources available 1) for free and 2) on demand, such that you can pick and choose what you learn and at what speed you learn it.

Khan Academy has delivered over 300 million lessons since it started in 2006, features 5,000 free instructional videos in 65 languages, and allows users to complete 4 million exercises every day – simply amazing.

In 2011, Stanford professor Andrew Ng decided to put his machine learning course online for free, thinking that maybe a few additional people would tune in with his students. Within days, 100,000 people had signed up to take the course.

We are already seeing technology democratize access to education – but soon the education itself will become even more powerful with the help of AI and virtual and augmented reality.

In the near future, artificial intelligence will be able to personalize learning platforms to each individual student.

The AI will have unlimited access to information and will deliver it at the optimal speed to each student in an engaging, fun way.

This is a nice breakdown which delineates different ways to approach information in an accessible fashion,  These skills go hand in hand with the research process to make students generate new knowledge and opinions.
