Social networking, especially via Twitter and Facebook, has become a major part in modern life for many millions of people.
We need to educate young people to understand that it is wrong to write anything on a social networking site which you wouldn’t say to someone’s face. As it is, it is all to easy to get carried away when you’re addressing someone you can’t see and whom you may not know personally.
Second, Twitter and Facebook are, as has been well publicised, a groomer’s dream. It is vital that children – and I’m sure most parents and schools are already doing this – be carefully drilled in spotting the dangers. That means, for example, never posting suggestive photographs, ‘flirting’ online with strangers, or agreeing to meet anyone you’ve ‘met’ only via a social networking site.
The key to making all this work, however, is that teachers and schools have to be open-minded and prepared to embrace new ways of working. Many, of course, are doing so with enthusiasm, ===> but some are still locked in dinosaur mode. <===

Is it time for social media education in our schools? The recent Manti Te'o hoax is only the tip of the iceberg. He knew how to use social media, but didn’t understand its power.
There is an urgent need to educate students at all levels on the responsible use of social media. It’s time to help students navigate this unfiltered world of anonymous faces. When searching for a curriculum for social media education. Teaching students how to set their privacy levels on applications is only the starting line, not the finish line.

A major in-depth study examining how teenagers in the UK are using the internet and other mobile devices says the benefits of using such technologies far outweigh any perceived risks.
The findings are based on a large-scale study of more than 1,000 randomly selected households in the UK, coupled with regular face-to-face interviews with more than 200 teenagers and their families between 2008 and 2011.
Gust MEES's insight:
SO, knowing this NOW, Education should go a step further and HELP protecting the kids by TEACHING the basics of Cyber-Security and Internet-Safety!
BOTH are a MUST in 21st Century, while Internet-Safety is the THEORY and basics of Cyber-Security the ===> PRACTICE! <===

A focus on child safety is among the top state laws taking effect at the start of 2013. In many states, new laws take effect on Jan. 1, 2013
Now It’s Your Turn With all this new legislation, it should be a reminder that if the government is concerned about the safety of your kids online, you should be concerned too.
===> It is ultimately the parents’ responsibility to protect their children both off line and online. <===
Gust MEES's insight:
IMHO: There is ONLY 1 solution ===> Education needs (a MUST) to teach the kids up from the early years about how to get protected, the practice!
I have prepared already FREE courses and advice on HowTo:
In case if that advice couldn't apply for what ever reason, here is solution 2:
===> In ANY case, the Governement and Education SHOULD be involved, their responsibility as in e-Learning and with "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) the kids work with Internet and MUST have BEST protection and BEST protected aerea where ever they go online! <===
Thus meaning: Internet-Safety (theory) and Cyber-Security knowledge (practice) are a MUST to teach to the kids!
I will publish soon a new blog (FREE course) on HowTo explain in depth, stay tuned and follow here:

I agree that some measures are needed to protect children from the harms that can come with the internet. However, I do believe there is only so much that the government can do before it begins to affect citizens freedom. How will these new laws affect internet users? Will it be a positive move on the governments part?

I think this is a good and bad idea. I think it's by far an invasion of privacy but i also believe that it will save a lot of lives and that overrules invasion of privacy. So it's probably not a bad idea considering cyber bullying has only gotten worse.

I agree that this is a good idea for the government to keep children safe on the internet. People are becoming more violent and violating a lot of people's personal business on the internet. I believe that the internet is becoming more unsafe.
