Responsible, reasonable netizens aren’t born – they’re made, and it all begins with their parent guiding them. | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Instead of bruises and cuts, however, your child may be exposed to inappropriate content, online bullying, or malware. One most recent example is the rogue version of the famous Bad Piggies game app, which lures in victims with the promise of a free version of the game. These and other threats are the troubles you will have to make sure your child steers clear away from.

It’s a parent’s responsibility to ensure that wherever their children are, they remain safe, happy and secure. The Internet, in this respect, is no different than any other playground in the park or at school. It looks harmless, even magical at first glance, but could result in some spills and tears if kids are left unsupervised around it.

E-Safety – the role for educators

E-Safety – the role for educators | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The Network Information Security in Education, 2012 report by the European Network and Information Security Agency outlines the role educators can play in teaching positive and responsible online behaviour to students.

The report stresses the importance of not making assumptions about children’s knowledge on e-Safety issues due to the many misconceptions which exist about appropriate use of the Internet. Issues which educators are likely to be aware of, such as keeping passwords secure and not downloading copyright material, may be viewed quite differently by students. Many teenagers share passwords with each other as a sign of true friendship and many see internet content as public property and download music, videos and images without a thought of the legal issues of copyright.

The report sets out ways educators can help children use technology wisely and safely:

June is National Internet Safety Month. But who is making sure our children are safe online?

Five million social media users are under the age of 10 years old, and 51% have given out personal information online to strangers. Out of all teenagers, 95% have been online and 80% use social media, where peer pressure can prompt them to post personal information and photos to strangers when they update their status online.

===> Only 10% of these teens ever talk with a parent about the internet!!! <===

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The back-to-school season is responsible for billions of dollars spent on digital devices; laptops, tablets and smartphones are changing the way our children learn, and subsequently, the way they interact with the world around them. Unfortunately, many children fall victim to the negative aspects of technology: cyberbullying, sexting and online predation. While certainly all children won’t encounter these issues, it certainly doesn’t mean they don’t exist, and it isn’t an excuse for you not to be aware. In today’s digitally connected world, one of the best things we can offer our child is our parental, involvement, education and vigilance. While you certainly don’t have to stay ahead of your kids when it comes to knowing about the coolest photo app, it is critically important that you know when they start using it; you have a safety plan in place, and you know what to talk to your kids about as well as have insured that all their digital devices are safety enabled.

Photo Geotagging – How It Works & How to Disable It

Photo Geotagging – How It Works & How to Disable It | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Geotagging: the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as photographs, video, websites, [etc]. That’s the definition from Wikipedia.

If you’re still unclear on what this means, just imagine using your smartphone to take photos of your child at his/her school performance, then uploading them from your smartphone to a site like Facebook or Flickr, or directly to Twitter via a service like TwitPic or yfrog. Now imagine a complete stranger being able to pinpoint the exact location of where those photos were taken. Well, that’s what geotagging does. And it’s the same technology you’ll find in social networking services like Facebook Places or Foursquare.

Here’s a video that my good friend Sue Scheff forwarded to me. It gives you a nice glimpse into how geotagging technology works on your mobile device, and why you might want to consider disabling it on your smartphone, and your child’s.
