Why You Need Emotional Intelligence to Succeed | EQ | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Emotional intelligence is the "something" in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results. Emotional intelligence consists four core skills that pair up under two primary competencies: personal competence and social competence.

EM Matthews's curator insight, June 20, 2015 6:01 AM

EQ is easily one of the most necessary, yet under-sought character skill sets for effective leadership and management! EQ was once the result of years of trial and error regarding effective social interactions. As the article suggests we all have the capacity for EQ, the challenge rests, however in actively nurturing (through targeted practice) our efforts at successfully employing and improving our EQ abilities, or characteristics.

Couples often come in and say, “We need help with our communication,” and the presumption is that they need to become better communicators–by which they mean better talkers. But the best thing you can do for your relationship is become a better listener.

Here are some tips for improving your listening with everyone in your life–your partner, friends, colleagues, kids. They’ll all benefit, and so will you.1)  Notice when you’re just waiting to talk.

Leaders Who Can Read Collective Emotions Are More Effective | Empathy | EQ

Leaders Who Can Read Collective Emotions Are More Effective | Empathy | EQ | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Until now, there have been a variety of tools for managers who wish to measure the emotional cues of individuals, such as the Brief Affect Recognition Test to understand cross-cultural facial expressions. Facial expressions provide a wealth of reliable information about how others are making sense of the world around them, and allow us to tailor our responses to the individual in a one-on-one situation.

This represents one of the key measures of emotional intelligence, which evaluates how well individuals perceive and deal with affectively charged interpersonal situations.

Read more at http://knowledge.insead.edu/strategy/leaders-who-can-read-collective-emotions-are-more-effective-4002#VsZzWHkFKKeIo3ac.99
But there are situations in which leaders have to deal with the emotions of large groups of people, not just those of one or a few individuals and most managers don’t have time to operate on a one-on-one basis all the time. Understanding the collective can help leaders respond effectively to the group as a whole. This happens in situations such as dealing with the collective anxiety of executives facing the news of corporate restructuring; or public authorities dealing with the collective anger of large groups of people in the streets; or politicians seeking to inspire large groups of people to win an election. Those with the skill to pick up on the subtle emotional cues of the collective can adapt accordingly and, according to our research, earn more respect as a result. So how can this ability to see the forest for the trees be applied by leaders?

What is soft skills? - Definition from WhatIs.com

What is soft skills? - Definition from WhatIs.com | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Soft skills is a synonym for "people skills." The term describes those personal attributes that indicate a high level of emotional intelligence.

Unlike hard skills, which describe a person's technical skill set and ability to perform specific tasks, soft skills are broadly applicable across job titles and industries. It's often said that hard skills will get you an interview but you need soft skills to get -- and keep -- the job.

The Dalai Lama uses the term "emotional hygiene" to urge us to get our disturbing emotions -- anger, frustration, anxiety -- under better control. Then, he says, adopt an attitude of concern for others, and act from that stance.

In the emotional intelligence world emotional hygiene falls under "self-management," and concern for others fits the "empathy" category.

3 Ways a Leader’s Attitude Impacts the Team | Success | Character | Empathy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Everyone struggles with keeping their attitude positive, even people in leadership roles. The pressure of leadership, personal issues, and life in general will impact your mood, energy and attitude. And, attitude matters more than you probably realize. When left unchecked your attitude can damage your team.

Without saying a word your attitude permeates from your skin. Even when you think you are hiding it and that no one sees they often do. Here are 3 ways a leader’s attitude impacts the team.

Your attitude sets their attitude

Attitude is contagious especially when you are in a leadership role. Positive or negative your team will soon adopt your attitude. Over time, your attitude sets the tone for the employees and also indicates what is and is not acceptable.

Even when you don’t want your attitude to impact the organization it will.

Attitude matters!  A teacher's attitude affects the students - a leader's attitude sets the tone for the entire building.  Someone once said, "the principal should be the happiest person in the building" (it is the principal, more than others, who controls so much of what goes on).

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Much of the disaffection with the school system stems from a pervasive feeling that the intense focus on formal academics has inadvertently neglected the rest of a child’s personality and humanity. While employers, psychologists and other researchers have repeatedly noted that social and emotional skills like empathy are some of the most important ones for success, many schools still lag in developing effective programs to nurture those soft skills.

Societal norms posit girls as being more emotionally intelligent than boys, but the subtle ways that teachers and parents reinforce that gender stereotype can harm boys, who need to learn empathy as an important life skill for connecting with others, problem-solving and developing moral courage.

Many of these interpersonal skills develop naturally when children have the opportunity to play together in unstructured environments, but free play is on the decline both in schools and at home. Researchers are now even questioning if lack of free play in students’ lives could be partly responsible for rising rates of depression among youth.

The Poisoning of Our Minds

The Poisoning of Our Minds | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
I watch the killing that’s taking place around the world and ask myself why?

How can someone be so intolerant that they can kill another person over their beliefs? How can someone be so angry that they’re willing to take the life of an innocent child to advance a cause? How can someone be so confused that they refuse to honor and value a life?

There’s no simple answer to the horrific crisis that we face, but I’m convinced that a contributing factor is the poisoning of our minds.

We are bombarded with hatred, intolerance, and violence every day. The entertainment industry incorporates hate, intolerance, and violence into movies, music, comedy routines, and video games in order to increase sales.

The news media hypes violence to boost television ratings. Politicians appeal to our dark side to win votes. These acts are desensitizing our personal values, polluting our minds, and corroding our culture.

While violent and hateful stimulation do not affect everyone, repetitive, negative stimulation may confuse an already deranged mind and cause that mind to snap — just as steel may break if bombarded continually at its weakest spot.
