Hackers turn 162,000 WordPress sites into DDoS attack tools

Hackers turn 162,000 WordPress sites into DDoS attack tools | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Legitimate sites forced to aid criminals' illicit botnet operations

Hackers have hijacked more than 162,000 legitimate WordPress sites, connecting them to a criminal botnet and forcing them to mount distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, according to security firm Sucuri.

Sucuri CTO Daniel Cid said the company uncovered the botnet when analysing an attack targeting one of its customers. Cid said Sucuri managed to trace the source of the attack to legitimate WordPress sites.

"The most interesting part is that all the requests were coming from valid and legitimate WordPress sites. Yes, other WordPress sites were sending random requests at a very large scale and bringing the site down," read the blog.

Hacking Twitter ‘incredibly easy,’ security specialist says

Hacking Twitter ‘incredibly easy,’ security specialist says | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Two bucks and a rudimentary command of the English language is enough for a successful Twitter hack, the likes of which was carried out against Associated Press Tuesday when hackers tweeted the false report that President Obama had been injured in explosions at the White House.

"It is incredibly easy to do, it takes zero technical skill and it has a high success rate," said Ryan Purita, forensic examiner and security specialist with Vancouver's Sherlock Forensics. "For the average Joe, it might be impossible to do, but for the average 14-year-old who lives on the Internet, it's easy."

The bogus tweet, which read: "Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured," resulted in an immediate stock market drop, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging 150 points within seconds before recovering almost as quickly.

A tweet from @APMikeBaker suggests the hack may have resulted from a "phishing" expedition:

#SMBchat on Symantec Internet Security Threat Report on Thursday, April 25, at 9 a.m. PT / 12 p.m. ET | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Symantec helps consumers and organizations secure and manage their information-driven world.

The ISTR, which covers the major threat trends observed by Symantec in 2012, reveals that cybercriminals view SMBs as a prime target for stealing information. In fact, the largest growth area for targeted attacks in 2012 was businesses with fewer than 250 employees; 31 percent of all attacks targeted them, representing a threefold increase from 2011.

Getting a clear understanding of the dangers is an important step in improving security, and this year’s report is a wake-up call that SMBs are now being specifically targeted by cybercriminals.

Twitter Blog: Keeping our users secure

Twitter Blog: Keeping our users secure | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

As you may have read, there’s been a recent uptick in large-scale security attacks aimed at U.S. technology and media companies. Within the last two weeks, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have chronicled breaches of their systems, and Apple and Mozilla have turned off Java by default in their browsers.

This week, we detected unusual access patterns that led to us identifying unauthorized access attempts to Twitter user data. We discovered one live attack and were able to shut it down in process moments later. However, our investigation has thus far indicated that the attackers may have had access to limited user information – usernames, email addresses, session tokens and encrypted/salted versions of passwords – for approximately 250,000 users.

Tweetdeck has an XSS flaw. Here's what you should do about it | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
A potentially serious security flaw has been found in Tweetdeck, the popular Twitter client. Here's what you need to know.

In my opinion, Tweetdeck isn’t safe to use until the flaw has been fixed.

So you need to quit Tweetdeck right now, and revoke its access to your Twitter account.

Here’s how you do it:

1. Go to the Apps section of your Accounts settings on the Twitter website:https://twitter.com/settings/applications (If you are not already logged into Twitter, it will ask you to enter your password and two-factor authentication, if enabled).

2. Find Tweetdeck in the list and revoke its access by pressing the button entitled (imaginatively) “Revoke access”:

ENISA's new corporate 2013 video clip launched

ENISA's new corporate 2013 video clip launched | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
"Everything is connected"

ENISA has launched its new corporate video clip. This six-minutes movie describes the role of ENISA in a world where "everything is connected" both privately and professionaly. Communication technology connects us to family, friends, banks, and other private and e-government services we all rely on. But the Internet is under constant threat, from crime, attacks and accidents. Spamhaus, Stuxnet, Flamer, High Roller to name a few of the sophisticated cyber-attacks that took place the last 3 years.

It is the European Union Agency ENISA’s job to work with prevention at EU levels in the field of cyber security. ENISA is working with governments, regulators and industry to assess risks and identify practical solutions to keep business, citizens and economy secure.

This way, we support the smooth functioning of Europe’s internal market.
