How to block pornography - Porn filter on phone - Anti porn software | DigitalCitiZEN | Parenting | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Are you a parent wondering how to block pornography on your child's internet and mobile devices? Our free digital parenting guide explains what is involved.

It is estimated that there are over 4 million pornography sites, that 25% of searches on search engines are pornography related, 30% of all internet traffic is pornography and the percentage of internet users who view pornography is estimated at 42%.  (source: Internet filter review)

If that last statistic of 42% seems high to you, a survey by Cosmopolitan Magazine of 4,000 men found that 30% watched porn daily and  71% of men 18-34 watch it at least once a month.  In a 2014 survey by the Oxford Union in the UK, 71.8% of all students said they view porn; 91% of men vs 51% of women.

In February 9, 2014 the Irish Mirror reported that Ireland’s internet porn use has increased 77%since 2010.

The reality is that it is very easy for our kids to be exposed to it. However, if you want to block pornography it is becoming increasingly difficult and complicated. It is no longer as simple as installing some anti porn software on your PC or installing a porn filter on your PC because kids now access the internet predominantly on mobile devices and also via gaming consoles.

5 Myths and Truths About Kids' Internet Safety | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Advice from Common Sense Media editors. Help keep your kids' online experiences positive and productive by learning the truth (and ignoring the rumors) about what really makes them safe.

By all means, use parental controls to help prevent exposure to age-inappropriate material and to manage time limits. But don't think they get you off the hook.

Continue to discuss responsible, respectful online behavior, set rules and consequences for misbehavior, and train your kid to manage his or her own usage.

Essential elements of digital citizenship

Essential elements of digital citizenship | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Nearly all of the ISTE Standards list digital citizenship as one of the aspects of education technology that all members of a school or district should support. Specifically, the standards tend to focus on the safe, legal and ethical use of technology in schools.

This is certainly at the heart of the ideas behind digital citizenship, but as technology integration grows, not only in schools but in society as a whole, I believe the concept of digital citizenship will continue to expand.

This made me think about not just how we as teachers feel about technology use in schools, but also, how do our students feel about it? We know many of them know more about how to use the technology than we do, so are we involving them in the decisions we make about use and purchase of technology...or are we doing what we've always done and assumed we know better than they do?

The Awkward 'Privacy Talk' Parents Should Have With Their Kids

The Awkward 'Privacy Talk' Parents Should Have With Their Kids | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Parents across the world today need to have a new conversation with their kids. No, it’s not about behaving in class, not talking to strangers, or having sex. But in so many ways, it's just as important. It’s data permanence. How we can preserve our reputations in the digital era?

It’s a conversation that will look very different in different parts of the world. In some places, kids will have to think twice before posting photos of teenage escapades, given how such photos may look to others in a professional environment even many years later. In other places, kids will have to be careful of posting any items that may “dishonor” them or their family in some way.

In still other places, kids will have to think about whether what they post on sensitive political, ethnic, or religious issues may define them long after they have changed their views.

We have been having these types of important discussions with our students in digital literacy classes. What is interesting to note is that it becomes a parent piece that often schools have to provide to help them keep up with their children and  the good, bad and the ugly of technology.

Noeline Laccetti's curator insight, March 5, 2014 9:47 AM

Data permanence must be addressed with ALL children, and well before the "sex talk"

Jenny Ritchie's curator insight, March 5, 2014 7:36 PM

New technologies have exposed behaviours of young people which have put their future success at risk.  Are these new behaviours created by the opportunities that are provided by new technology?  Or are these behaviours that would have been typical of young people even without the technologies they use as a vehicle to display them?

Schools have a duty to provide a secure environment and safe access to online technology as part of the teaching and learning experience. The eSafety Label aims to assist your school in meeting this challenge to become a more secure, enriching environment for staff and pupils. Good online experiences go hand-in-hand with a solid School Policy and a well thought-out eSafety Action Plan

The eSafety Label offers you an Assessment Form covering the broad range of actors who can impact, within and beyond the school walls, the level of eSafety of your institution. Based on a school's results an Action Plan is drawn up, to increase the level of eSafety, which might lead the way towards eSafety Label Accreditation, when the necessary changes have been made.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs begins with humanity’s most basic needs and builds from there until we reach our most satisfied self. After our most basic physical needs (air, food, water, sleep), the need for safety is the second most critical stage to our wellbeing. Whether or not we believe in Maslow’s theory, we can all agree that on its surface this makes sense, whether we are talking about ourselves, our families, our businesses, or our community.

Vorsicht vor WhatsApp-Kettenbrief und Erpresser-Trojaner | CyberSecurity | InternetSafety | eSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

This blog article shares some great insights into how to best train our youth (and adults) about proper online content use and downloading.

christian campos's curator insight, February 15, 2015 9:37 PM

This article does what the title says. its shows how we as users should have respect for other peoples content and how we sometimes don't acknowledge when we are getting a form of media illegally. I Agree with the article stating that sometimes downloads can result in "trojans", therefore exposing your computer to a harmful virus. Kids and digital immigrants would most likely fall into these traps due to  the unfamiliarity  of these downloads or websites.

The Future of the Internet of Things [infographic] | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Ever wonder why Google is installing extreamly fast gigabit internet infrastructure when the average person needs 200x less speed? It is because of the future of the Internet of Things. In less than 10 years, the internet will not just be for your phone or laptop, everything will be online.

I’m talking about your car, fridge, tv, blender, air conditioner, front door, and even your wallet. This inevitable future is why google is starting today with affordable gigabit internet. This new wave of device overload will open up revenue and advertising streams to a whole new level.

Today’s infographic states that in 2020, every human being on earth will be connected to 10 separate devices.

I know I’m already using five and I bet one of the most prominent technology coming up soon will be wearable tech. If its for exercising, sports, general information or just making phone calls, wearable tech will be an exciting addition today’s digital arsenal.
