Blended learning means offering a combination of face-to-face and online learning opportunities to learners. Blending these learning opportunities can contribute to personalizing learning. However, blended learning is not the only approach that personalizes learning. Personalizing learning starts with the learner. This means that learners have a stake in their learning by taking responsibility for their learning. When they own and drive their learning, they are more motivated to want to learn. In a learning environment that starts with the learner, teacher and learner roles change. Via Nik Peachey

The Learning Environment is possibly the most interesting. Flexible Learning Spaces could also be taken as not just meaning the physical space but the intellectual one also.

There are three main stages to personalized learning, which involves the teacher figuring out how each student learns individually and establishing goals for the students. A teacher can change the physical layout if this helps(when working with children who are easily distracted, such as those with ADHD or autism, it's best to get rid of as many distractions as possible). The student will learn at their own pace in whatever way is the most effective.

With the push to Personalize Learning and at the same time meet the Common Core State Standards, you may consider this a contradiction of philosophies. Yet, you can create a Personalized Learning Environment and meet the standards. Using Universal Design for Learning (UDL), both the teacher and the learner understand how the learner accesses information, engages with content, and expresses what they know.
The result is a Personal Learner ProfileTM that serves as a guide for them in selecting appropriate tools and resources to support their learning. They now become active participants in their learning prepared to meet the Common Core and be college-and career-ready.

When learning is personal, teaching and learning changes. Teachers' and learners' roles change. Last January, we created a chart comparing Personalization vs Individualization vs Differentiation and a report that explained the difference between these three terms including teacher-centered vs. learner-centered approaches. This chart has been downloaded tens of thousands of times from all over the world and prompted discussions around some of these questions:
> How do you see teachers' and learners' roles changing? > How does a school or district know they are Ready to Transform learning? > What is Assessment AS Learning? > Can personalization help close the achievement gap? > Where are the conversations, models, and examples of personalizing learning?
