How can teachers and administrators help students overcome negative attitudes about school and learning?

Gust MEES's insight:

How can teachers and administrators help students overcome negative attitudes about school and learning?

Shannon Lim 's curator insight, February 28, 2015 10:25 AM

The author of the article tried to understand the student's situation first before approaching him and was determined to change the negative attitudes of the student. Despite failing to convey his main message to the student, the author kept trying so as to make sure the student understands. Hence, i find that teachers who put in their best to nurture a student are respectable. Those teachers will not give up on a student no matter how bad is he/she and will persevere to change the negative attitudes of the students. This positive change would be a great benefit to the students in the future. Therefore, teachers should not give up on a student. If they give up, the negative attitudes of the student may remain unchanged.

Also, i think that in order to help students overcome negative attitudes about school and learning, a teacher should understand the student and talk to him/her nicely so that they know that you care for him/her.

The Importance Of Intrinsic Motivation In Transforming Learning

The Importance Of Intrinsic Motivation In Transforming Learning

Giving teachers and students as much autonomy as possible in choosing their own curricular material is another way that we can improve student engagement.

Only students who are intrinsically motivated to be engaged in school will end up truly challenged, enriched, energized and ultimately fulfilled by their experience. Yes it’s an ideal, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

¿Qué motiva a los estudiantes a comprometerse en la escuela?

Jason Beal's curator insight, May 22, 2013 12:20 PM

Many students are not motivated in the right way. if asked, they would say they go to school because everyone else does. It is also less effective for a student to say they have to do well to get on to the next level o their education. Giving more grades than feedback can turn"marks" into currency. Extrinisic motivation doesn't get students truly involved in their learning.Only initrinsically motivated students can truly be challenged in school.

Bienvenue dans l'Univers du Mieux Apprendre.... | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

“I touch the future. I teach.” – Christina McAuliffe

I believe our students are our future. Each of our students has the potential to bring something unique and special to the world.

Teaching is an important and honourable occupation that demands commitment. There are miracles, learning, healing, laughter, sharing and love every day in classrooms all around the world.

A teacher has the opportunity to impact on students’ lives in a positive way; this is a huge privilege that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

As a dedicated teacher, I will endeavour to;

Leading Motivated Learners: Principals Need PD Too

Leading Motivated Learners: Principals Need PD Too | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

As I have started doing preliminary research for my dissertation I have discovered that high quality, relevant and sustainable Professional Development (PD) opportunities for principals (and building leaders in general) are limited. How is that possible?

- Principals are supposed to be visionaries!

- Principals are supposed to be transformational in their leadership!

- Principals are supposed to be responsible for the learning and growth for all those around them!

How can all that be accomplished without proper support through high quality PD?

I'm not 100% certain but what I do know is that upon reflecting on the various workshops and conferences I have attended in my eight years as a building leader, not many of them have given me knowledge or information or resources to best support my role as an instructional leader (except for Twitter, which has led me to this potential dissertation study)! It's no wonder finding effective principals who are good at their job and are willing to stay in the position for an extended period of time to support growth, change and learning is more the exception and not the rule.

Is this because they lack support? Is it because they lack the "necessary" skills? Or is it because they lack high quality PD??

What Motivates Creativity? | Moments of Genius | Big Think | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Extrinsic motivation, in contrast, is the daily pressure we feel from outside incentives – grades, salaries, and promotions – put in place to encourage output. Here’s the question: Is creative output the product of intrinsic or extrinsic motivation? Do we need a reason to work? Or is passion enough?
