Critical pedagogy: schools must equip students to challenge the status quo | #RadicalPedagogy

Critical pedagogy: schools must equip students to challenge the status quo | #RadicalPedagogy | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Teachers should embrace a radical pedagogy and provoke students to demand equality for themselves and others, argues vice principal Tait Coles

Schools must develop a commitment to civic courage and social responsibility that ignites bravery in young people to realise they have the power and opportunity to challenge the status quo. School leaders have a duty to promote learning that encourage students to question rather than forcing teachers to lead drill-oriented, stimulus-and-response methodologies. Teachers must awaken the passions of their students and teach the knowledge and skills needed to direct and sustain it.

Students need the freedom and encouragement to determine and discover who they are and to understand that the system shouldn't define them – but rather give them the skills, knowledge and beliefs to understand that they can set the agenda. Educators must be prepared to embrace a radical pedagogy and believe that each school should be one of freedom that provokes students to fight against the corridors of power and enforce equality for themselves and others.

Critical pedagogy is the only way to achieve this. The philosophy was first described by Paulo Freire and has since been developed by the likes of Henry Giroux, Peter McLaren and Roger Simon. Critical pedagogy isn't a prescriptive set of practices – it's a continuous moral project that enables young people to develop a social awareness of freedom. This pedagogy connects classroom learning with the experiences, histories and resources that every student brings to their school. It allows students to understand that with knowledge comes power; the power that can enable young people to do something differently in their moment in time and take positive and constructive action.

Using a Question Building Chart to Provoke Student Thought

Using a Question Building Chart to Provoke Student Thought | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
One of the most effective ways to provoke student thought is through the building of “rich” questions. By asking meaningful questions - and interacting with textual information – students can come to an understanding that builds upon on their own personal experiences and opinions. Through the use of a template, questions can be created in any way that you want and provide you with a specific platform to begin your questioning focus.

Gust MEES's insight:

By creating a variety of questions using stems such as; who, what, where, when, why and how; students can think about different parts of the text and recognize that the answers are not always found on the page.

Constructive Criticism -- The Secret To Career Improvement

Constructive Criticism -- The Secret To Career Improvement | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Have you ever asked someone you trusted, respected or admired for his or her feedback and constructive criticism about your work performance? If not, consider giving it a try

Obtaining constructive criticism can be a powerful exercise. For some, it may confirm the perceptions they already had of themselves. Others will find it to be an eye-opening experience.

For the most part, you’ll find that people feel flattered to be a part of your proactive personal development.

Does obtaining feedback and constructive criticism really work? For me, it’s provided an opportunity to learn things about myself I didn’t always know. The feedback also allowed me to adjust certain behaviors so I could positively impact the perception of others. What’s not to love about that?

I think, as educators, we need to stop talking change. We need to stop talking revolution, or reform, or transformation, or evolution or any of those other words that basically say what we’re doing isn’t working.

We need to set common goals and then use what we know about teaching and learning to reach those goals.

It’s not about test scores.

It’s not about reading and writing and ‘rithmetic–or coding, or tinkering, or making or technology. It’s about LEARNING… and COMPREHENDING… and ANALYZING… and EVALUATING… and CREATING… and THINKING… and using the habits of mind that support critical thinking, reacting thoughtfully, doing and sharing.

Space Shuttle-Say Goodbye with a Smile

Space Shuttle-Say Goodbye with a Smile | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Abschied vom Space Shuttle

Sociology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sociology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Sociology is the scientific study of human society[1] and its origins, development, organizations, and institutions.[2] It is a social science which uses various methods of empirical investigation[3] and critical analysis[4] to develop a body of knowledge about human social activity, structures, and functions.

A goal for many sociologists is to conduct research which may be applied directly to social policy and welfare, while others focus primarily on refining the theoretical understanding of social processes. Subject matter ranges from the micro level of individual agency and interaction to the macro level of systems and thesocial structure.[5]

Devil's advocate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Devil's advocate

In common parlance, a devil's advocate is someone who, given a certain argument, takes a position they do not necessarily agree with (or simply an alternative position from the accepted norm), for the sake of debate or to explore the thought further.

Gust MEES's insight:

In common parlance, a devil's advocate is someone who, given a certain argument, takes a position they do not necessarily agree with (or simply an alternative position from the accepted norm), for the sake of debate or to explore the thought further.

In taking this position, the individual taking on the devil's advocate role seeks to engage others in an argumentative discussion process. The purpose of such a process is typically to test the quality of the original argument and identify weaknesses in its structure, and to use such information to either improve or abandon the original, opposing position.

It can also refer to someone who takes a stance that is seen as unpopular or unconventional, but is actually another way of arguing a much more conventional stance.
