Preparing for the Future: Learning Activities

Preparing for the Future: Learning Activities | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The World Economic Forum shared the Future of Jobs report in 2018 that provided a list of the growing skills for 2022. Here are the top 10:

- Analytical thinking and innovation
- Active learning and learning strategies
- Creativity, originality, and initiative
- Technology design and programming
- Critical thinking and analysis
- Complex problem-solving
- Leadership and social influence
- Emotional intelligence
- Reasoning, problem-solving, and ideation
- Systems analysis and evaluation

If we look at these 10 skill areas, what types of learning experiences or learning spaces can we create for our students that can address most if not all of them? Looking at these skills individually and thinking about the nature of our work, it can seem overwhelming. However, there are some simple ways to create a space where students can build all of these skills and more.

Here are six ideas to try that can help to address these skills:

1. Project-based Learning (PBL)

2. Coding

3. STEAM and Makerspaces

4. Place-based

5. Genius Hour

6. Student-Led PD or Teacher for a Day

Good cyber hygiene habits to help stay safe online | Norton | #CyberSecurity #DigitalResponsibility #DigitalCitiZENship

Good cyber hygiene habits to help stay safe online | Norton | #CyberSecurity #DigitalResponsibility #DigitalCitiZENship | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Have you heard of something called cyber hygiene? Surely, brushing your teeth and taking showers isn’t something traditionally associated with technology — yet the term is a useful metaphor for needing to make smart decisions about your smart devices.

Good hygiene is something you’re taught as a child and something that generally sticks with you for the rest of your life. It involves three basic principles: using products and tools that fit your hygiene needs, performing these hygienic tasks correctly, and establishing a routine.

But what is cyber hygiene and what does it have to do with your computer and connected devices?

Cyber hygiene is about training yourself to think proactively about your cyber security — as you do with your daily personal hygiene — to resist cyber threats and online security issues. Unfortunately, cyber security still isn’t taken as seriously as cavities and root canals. Some people take cyber security for granted, but this may change, as cyber threats continue to evolve. In the meantime, establishing solid cyber hygiene practices should be as routine as brushing your teeth.

Here are a few tips to get you and your family thinking about good cyber hygiene practices.

Learning Technology as a Professional Practice: Developing a Critical Perspective | EDUCAUSE

Learning Technology as a Professional Practice: Developing a Critical Perspective | EDUCAUSE | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Working in learning technology, or education technology ("edtech"), is changing as our understanding of technology develops. We have become more aware not only of the potential of technological innovation but also of what is needed to scale up this innovation from use in small-scale pilots or single classrooms to applications for all learners. Scaling up requires not only infrastructure and technical capabilities but also skilled staff and robust policies. Most importantly, we need to keep questioning whether learning technology really delivers benefits for all students. We know that technology has huge potential, but we now have decades of research and practice to build on as we move our professional practice beyond advocacy and toward a more reflective, more critical perspective—a perspective that, I hope, will empower us to tackle some of the complex questions around ethics, inclusion, equality, and privacy.

In this article, I wish to combine both a personal perspective and one informed by my professional position. I wish to share my personal views in order to get across why I think it is so important that we develop a more mature, more reflective, more critical perspective in our professional practice and how we might set about doing so in the age of automation and technological determinism. My outlook is also informed by the research, practice, and policy making led by the Association for Learning Technology (ALT) in its twenty-five years of work with thousands of professionals in the United Kingdom and across the globe.

BIGGEST HURDLE TO INNOVATION IN THE CLASSROOM | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #LEARNing2LEARN | #Adapting for #Change

BIGGEST HURDLE TO INNOVATION IN THE CLASSROOM | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing #LEARNing2LEARN | #Adapting for #Change | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

The current economy is centered on the need for innovation, with most workplaces in a constant state of evolution. The leaders of the present and the future need the ability to envision that change or, at least, the to adapt quickly and pivot when it is thrust upon them. That is why innovation in education is more important now than ever before.

To innovate is to look beyond what we are currently doing and develop a novel idea that helps us to do our job in a new way. The purpose of any invention, therefore, is to create something different from what we have been doing, be it in quality or quantity or both. To produce a considerable, transformative effect, the innovation must be put to work, which requires prompt diffusion and large-scale implementation.

Innovation is generally understood as “the successful introduction of a new thing or method” In essence, “innovation seems to have two sub components. First, there is the idea or item which is novel to a particular individual or group and, second, there is the change which results from the adoption of the object or idea”. Thus, innovation requires three major steps: an idea, its implementation, and the outcome that results from the execution of the idea and produces a change.

In education, innovation can appear as a new pedagogic theory, methodological approach, teaching technique, instructional tool, learning process or institutional structure that, when implemented, produces a significant change in teaching and learning, which leads to better student learning. So, innovations in education are intended to raise productivity and efficiency of learning and/or improve learning quality.
