I'm not Promoting...I'm Sharing | Social Media | Twitter | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Recently I had a really great conversation with an outstanding principal (and now friend) I met through connections on Social Media. One of the things that came up was my distain for negativity, specifically among our peers.  I’m not talking

As an educator on social media this medium has allowed me to learn incredible things and connect with a huge variety of people I would have never had the opportunity to connect with. Being connected through Social Media and using these resources/connections has absolutely made me a better Principal and has enabled me to help improve the learning that is going on at our school. To me this is an absolute WIN-WIN for everyone!

THIS IS SOMETHING TO BE POSITIVE ABOUT!

Through social media I am going to talk about a lot of great things amazing people I know are doing because IT IS AMAZING and I want to share it with the world!

James Jandebeur's curator insight, March 16, 2014 9:59 AM

According to Facebook's news page, the service has 1.23 billion active users, a little over 20% of the population of the world. Twitter has around 200 million. These services, or something like them, have become increasingly important in our lives, influencing the news media and a variety of public decision making processes. Between a need for security and utility, we need to start learning, then teaching, then learning some more, how to best use social media, and classrooms are not the only place where this needs to be done.

Teaching with Twitter – Please check your baggage at the door | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

How-to’s and link roundups on teaching with Twitter has been done many times before, but the topic is worth frequent revisiting and refreshing, especially in the context of the #FutureEd initiative and the Pedagogy Project by HASTAC Scholars.

The goal of this review is to help think through if, why, and how to use Twitter in our teaching and learning – especially for those who remain skeptical.

I really like this article because it is very effective at weighing the pros and cons of using twitter in the classroom.  Some of the supplemental links are also very helpful to look at and include content on how to teach with Twitter and how to avoid some of the pitfalls that can result from using Twitter in a classroom setting.   In general, I believe strongly in helping students to develop global competency (as we have discussed in class) and I believe that Twitter is one of the best and most convenient mediums to do this.  While I am slightly apprehensive about how and if it is even possible to use Twitter in an elementary school classroom I definitely see more potential in using it after reading this article.

If you can do it with paper why use a digital alternative? Because for some of students, it makes the difference between engagement and being switched off.  Of couse finding the activities that you just can't do with paper...that's the real power of a digital solution.

A Mobile Dilemma

A Mobile Dilemma | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
A Critical 21st Century Skill

Now here we are in the year 2014, and things seem to be changing for many schools.

It would seem that the smartphone is finally getting its due as a computer with telephonic capabilities. Our phones are used as computers even as our computers are now used as phones.

An interesting Nielsen study showed that in March 2012, a majority (50.4 percent) of U.S. mobile subscribers owned smartphones. Mobile devices have also replaced desktop computers as the primary access device to the Internet.

The Ultimate Guide to Using Tags and Hashtags Effectively

The Ultimate Guide to Using Tags and Hashtags Effectively | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Researching the right keywords, expressions, tags and hashtags is more essential than ever. Here's a detailed guide to using them to your advantage.

Ultimately, tags and hashtags have the same purpose – to make you findable on websites loaded with content and to draw people’s attention to whatever it is you want them to see. As I always advocate, however, it’s about relevancy.

.

Both tags and hashtags play their role in the SEO of your website and content, because they are strongly related to the core keywords your website and organization are based on. Keywords with the right tags built upon them will ensure the long-term drive of relevant traffic to your website.

.

Hashtags will keep your content appearing in relevant popular streams.

I can probably find a better source, but this slideshow is a reminder that students who are self-aware of the PLN they are using are more likely to make strategic choices and learn more of what they are interested in. Creating a PLN based on a specific interest or goal would make an excellent independent study.
