A Simple Checklist For Teaching In The 21st Century

A Simple Checklist For Teaching In The 21st Century  | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

What are the kind of things a 21st century teacher needs to know and be able to do? What about 21st century students? What education technology works, and what is a waste of time? What would a checklist for 21st century teaching look like?

Does ‘21st-century teaching’ even make sense to use as a phrase anymore? If not, do we just say ‘teaching’? Does that fit our needs to innovate our collective profession to meet a modern circumstance?

These are among the questions today’s teachers have to face daily–in the classroom, mass media, professional development, and more. These conversations can get complex, opinionated, stuffed with rhetoric, and downright overwhelming at times. In response, Sylvia Duckworth has made consistent contributions to this conversation by creating colorful illustrations that communicate many of these ideas in easy-to-skim, easy-on-the-eyes, tempting to pin and share graphics.

Jessica Esmeralda's curator insight, February 17, 2019 10:18 PM
Hi!
I am a 21st century, how am I supposed to teach? What am I supposed to use in the classroom? I have had these kind of questions several times. In this article I've found a checklist of 10 things that todays' teachers should take into account in order to be a succesful 21st century teacher. The items i liked the most are:
1. My students have the opportunity to be creative--> SOmetimes classes become teacher-centered;however, the teacher must provide activities in which the creativity of students in challenged.
2.My students document and reflect on their learning--> nowadays teachers should include reflection in their classes since it is as important as the content. Teacher should provide students with steps and tips on how to reflect upon their own learning process.
3.My students are aware of how to be safe online and how to be good digital citizens--> Very important because it demostrates an adaptation to todays needs (which are totally differernt from society's needs ten years ago).

Enterprise Digital Transformation Trends 2017 | #Infographic | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
For a couple of years now, enterprises have undertaken the digital transformation efforts by way of using cloud services, data analytics, mobile, IoT and other technologies. While many have successfully embraced digital transformation, others have lagged at using data and right set of technologies to transform their organization. A Forbes research reveals that while 44 percent of organizations foresee themselves to be advanced in data and analytics, more than 90 percent of them have already seen increased revenue due to its implementation.

In 2017, enterprise digital transformation will continue to gain traction helping businesses to improve and accelerate processes and build upon what has already been achieved. However, they must understand that DX is not only about technology. It is more about reshaping of how the individuals operate, breaking down the silos and broadening the scopes of various roles and processes within the organization. It requires careful planning, seamless collaboration and inclusion of all the departments. If you’re planning to enable successful digital transformation, check out the infographic below highlighting top seven digital transformation trends.

Why Digital Transformation Won't Succeed Without Cultural Change | #ICT #Infographic #Digitalisierung | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
A lot of businesses frequently use the term Digital Transformation, but what does it actually mean?

We have become so accustomed to digital technology, we are no longer able to imagine life without it. And yet, when it comes to the digital transformation of the work environment, we still have a long way to go. The greatest obstacle for digital transformation is simply, people.

Make digital transformation a capability, not a project; transform operations not just customer experience #hbrwebinar @gwesterman

— Parag Gogate (@paraggogate) 18 août 2017

There are a number of things that don’t have to do with technical innovations that are going to make the process more complicated. That’s not to say that creating the proper infrastructure to accommodate the rapid pace of development is not going to be a major issue in and of itself. But a number of key factors in implementing digital solutions are related to people. And while is relatively easy to change and adapt to new technology, people are not.

Many global companies start to realize their business will be mostly digital within the coming years, but not many are really interested in dealing with the digital transformation.

How to Push the Boundaries of School with Dynamic Learning | Shake Up Learning | #ModernLEARNing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Does your classroom offer one-and-done types of learning activities, or does the learning grow, inspire, and evolve throughout the year and beyond? With tools like G Suite for Education that are available 24/7, the learning doesn’t have to stop when the bell rings at the end of class, or when the worksheet is turned in, or even when the school year ends. The learning takes on a life of its own; it becomes dynamic.

This concept alone should change the way you think about learning in general and change the way you facilitate learning in the classroom.

The author shares the idea about going beyond the mere fact of being learning only in the classroom. His thoughts on being more autonomous when implementing tools which provide the learners with the opportunity to practice at home leaves a space to consider the way we are making the education happen nowadays. Thereupon, I agree with the consideration about having learners dig deeper into their learning on their own terms with the tecnological devices found in this new era and let them dig deeper on things the are interested in the most.
David Alzate's curator insight, September 17, 2017 6:18 PM
This article advices teachers to help their students see learning as an entire life process, and that with all the tools we have available today it does not have to be boring, limited or seen as a burden. Instead, teachers can help them power and further a mindset of proactivity and independence in learning. It means that the children, teenagers or adults in a class can come to understand ,with their teacher’s help, that learning does not always mean to have a board and a teacher in front of a classroom. This article notes that it is of high importance for teachers to constantly be updated in all the new tools that are available for education, and to learn how to use them beyond the common and old way. In this new, connected and more globalized world, learning does not have to stop necessarily when the school day or year ends, it can be at any time, and also interesting and exciting; the deal here is to have teachers and therefore students thinking out of the box, and seeing education notas a burden or a must, but an enjoyable process insofar as this mindset is well provided and spread.

Foster A Growth Mindset in Your Class Using These Strategies | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

August , 2017
In her celebrated book ‘Mindset: The New Psychology of Success’, Stanford university psychologist Carol S. Dweck makes a strong case backed up with  scientific evidence for the power of mindset in shaping one’s success or failure in almost every facet of our life. Those with a fixed mindset mentality tend to be limited in their learning scope believing that their inner traits and abilities are biologically determined. On the other hand, people with a growth mindset embrace change and tend to learn more from life experiences because for them concepts such as skills, abilities and competencies are not fixated  and can be developed through a process of error and trial.

In today’s post, we are sharing with you this handy infographic we created based on Marcus Guido’s post ’10 Ways Teachers Can Instill a Growth Mindset in Students’. First, this article led me to consider mindset shaping as a powerful tool for learning as any other aspect of life. It explains the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset that normally refers to people constantly learning from any experience. Since their capabilities are not fixed, these people are never closed to a learning experience and always use the trial and error learning. They proposed an infographic with several strategies to foster a growth mindset in our students some of the steps include the use of diverse teaching strategies, explanations of purposes of abstract thinking, teaching values, among others.

Six Ways the Teacher's Role is Changing | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU

Six Ways the Teacher's Role is Changing | #LEARNing2LEARN #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
During this time of significant educational change, we are forced to ask ourselves, what is the role of the teacher?

Teachers continue to be central to learning, but the role is changing significantly. Our children still need to develop real skills and real knowledge, but they also need to be self-reliant, resilient, and fully capable of re-inventing themselves. This means students must learn how to self-direct their learning.

So if students are self-directing their learning, what's the role of the teacher?

Teachers build the curriculum/lessons with the individual student based on his/her needs and interests rather than move through a fixed curriculum en masse.

Teachers provide the experiences and tools to access new knowledge in specific areas of interest as facilitators of individual pathways, rather than being a provider of the content or expert in one or every area,Teachers become experts in how people learn, not only in teaching.

Teachers support a community of learners in teams, possibly of multiple ages, rather than alone in classrooms with fixed grades of students.

Teachers have more autonomy over their daily schedule, and can be flexible to adjust their schedules to support student needs.

Teachers provide opportunities for real-world, connected, practical learning rather than isolated academics.
These are the types of changes in the teacher's role that are fundamental to developing students who are capable of independent learning and reinvention in a rapidly changing world.

Luisa Fernanda Giraldo 's curator insight, December 4, 2020 11:58 PM
We can observe a significant change in the teacher's role. Nowadays, students are more independent in the learning process, and due to the pandemic situation, students are forced to create new study habits to learn by themselves. However, the teacher still plays a fundamental role in classes and provides different tools to help students improve while learning.

How can Europe benefit from blockchain technologies?

Digitising European Industry
ICT Innovation
Next Generation Internet
Boosting European digital industry

Blockchain is the best known distributed ledger technology. A ledger is a database which keeps a final and definitive record of transactions. Records, once stored, cannot be tampered without leaving behind a clear track. Blockchain enables a ledger to be held in a network across a series of nodes, which avoids one centralised location and the need for intermediaries’ services.

This is particularly helpful for providing trust, traceability and security in systems that exchange data or assets. There is a lot of potential for blockchain to be used in many different areas such as financial services, supply chains or healthcare.

European Commission launches the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum

Brussels, 1 February 2018

The Commission launched today the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum with the support of the European Parliament, represented by Jakob von Weizsäcker responsible for the recent report on virtual currencies.

The Blockchain Observatory and Forum will highlight key developments of the blockchain technology, promote European actors and reinforce European engagement with multiple stakeholders involved in blockchain activities.

Blockchain technologies, which store blocks of information that are distributed across the network, are seen as a major breakthrough, as they bring about high levels of traceability and security in economic transactions online. They are expected to impact digital services and transform business models in a wide range of areas, such as healthcare, insurance, finance, energy, logistics, intellectual property rights management or government services.

Emergent technologies are poised to radically change how we work and live. They will transform our cities and workplaces, shifting jobs and entrepreneurship in new directions, and spur new ways to manage our lives. All of society will be affected, up to and including how we interact with machines themselves.

Sophisticated machines and applications that communicate online will accelerate demand for broadband internet and challenge existing information and telecommunication norms.

All of this will require ongoing discussions about security, infrastructure and open-data policy and planning. We now need action. We must move past: “We know it’s coming and have to do something” to “Here is how we can implement and collaborate to make it happen.”

Preparing a child for the world that doesn’t yet exist is not an easy task for any teacher. Step back and look at that picture from a broad perspective. What are the critical 21st-century skills every learner needs to survive and succeed in our world? What abilities and traits will serve them in a time that’s changing and developing so rapidly?

They want to be challenged and inspired in their learning. They want to collaborate and work with their peers. They want to incorporate the technology they love into their classroom experiences as much as they can. In short, they have just as high a set of expectations of their educators as their educators have of them.

How Are Educators Responding?

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, (ACARA), have identified the following as the General Capabilities they see as essential for learners:

Critical and creative thinking

Personal and social capability

Ethical understanding

Intercultural understanding

Information and communication technology capability

Literacy

Five Laws of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) | #UNESCO #ModernEDU #Infographic | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Empowerment of people through Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is an important prerequisite for fostering equitable access to information and knowledge and promoting free, independent and pluralistic media and information systems.

Media and Information Literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media in our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and information - since it empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information providers, to critically evaluate their content, and to make informed decisions as users and producer of information and media content.

This info graphic lists many great resources that could influence ICT use in a classroom. Many of these we have explored through ICT Design, however many are new resources. This could be a great starting block for an ICT and student centered unit plan.

EDIT:
Upon reading this article, I agreed that these skills are necessary for 21st century teachers. I have re-read this article however, and now I see that these skills are just as important for 21st century students. Imagine sending students out into the workforce after school, with all of these skills. This Infographic has provided me with the inspiration for creating a learning sequence within a unit.

Within the drama classroom there is room for most of these skills. Within my unit plan, students have to prepare a performance but in addition to that, they have to market their performance. This will require posters, a promotion video, creating a website for the performance. Working collaboratively to decide what needs to be done, students then work independently on their task (decided within the group). This will give students the opportunity to excel in skills from outside of the drama classroom.
Jeff At CQU's curator insight, June 17, 2017 10:06 AM

This resource is excellent.  Highly organised, focused and very easy to read.  I think this would be a wonderful resource printed on a poster and displayed in the classroom.

Website addresses are given under nine headings that fit so well with the Australian Curriculum General Standards, the pedagogy I have chosen in my pedagogy map, and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers..

Examples of such links are as follows:

1. Category on Chart: Create infographics and posters (4 websites listed)

      LINKS TO:

(a) Australian Curriculum General Standards

    - Literacy - communicate concepts, ideas and detailed proposals

      LINKS TO:

(b) High end pedagogy

   - Provide students opportunities to communicate ideas and detailed proposals through various self-selected ICT technologies

      LINKS TO:

(c) Links to Pedagogy

   - Student direction: Students self-select methods to communicate their proposals, reports, drawings and specifications using media channels appropriate to the intended audience. To an extent directing, setting the pace and determining outcomes of learning (problem based learning).

      LINKS TO:

(d) ICT Connections

   - Students should understand and develop the ability to utilise different presentation software – such as Prezzi and PowerPoint.

2. Category on Chart: Create PLNs, connect, discover new content and grow professionally (4 websites listed)

      LINKS TO:

(a) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice

3. Category on Chart: Create, organize adn share digital resources

      LINKS TO:

(a) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

6.3 Engage with colleagues and improve practice

__________________________________________________________

In relation to SAMR, this allows for transformation learning in the following ways:

1. Modification: many tasks in the classroom can be re-designed with this poster being used to locate safe and appropriate resources on the internet.

An example is using a a resource under "Create Digital Portfolios" such as Weebly.com in place of a portfolio in book form.

2. Redefinition: new tasks, previously inconceivable are possible, such as displaying a student's portfolio on a mobile device as opposed to book form.

__________________________________________________________

In summary, this is brilliantly designed and I see it as a highly valuable resource for my teaching.
