Iowa State University servers breached, made to mine Bitcoins

Iowa State University servers breached, made to mine Bitcoins | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it

Iowa State University has revealed yesterday that five of its departmental servers on campus have been hacked, and that Social Security numbers of nearly 30,000 of its past and present students might have been stolen.

The good news is that while that data was contained on three of the compromised servers, there is no evidence that it has actually been accesses and/or exfiltrated.

The University's IT staff believes that the servers were targeted not for the information they contained, but for their computing power - the attackers have apparently been using them to mine Bitcoins.

Data breaches - over half are due to carelessness, says ICO

Data breaches - over half are due to carelessness, says ICO | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has announced that the majority of data breaches in the first quarter of 2013 were due to carelessness in the way that the information was handled.

That's according to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) which says 175 out of 335 incidents it examined between April 1 and June 30 were due to personal data being “disclosed in error”.

Half of data breaches are due to people being careless with what they do with private information. How can we all help to reduce this problem?

The user dumping the information on Bitcoin Security board uses the online alias “tvskit” and says that although not all the entries are valid, more than 60% of them should be working; all passwords are provided in plain text.

It is unclear how the information was collected, but the most plausible theory is that the attacker(s) gathered the details through phishing and different forms of data exfiltration, such as the use of infostealing malware.

The Fappening is more than just nude celebrity pics -- Can we trust Apple's iCloud? | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Sometimes I wish the internet could just be a place to exchange wholesome information, such as cooking recipes and tips on Linux, but sadly, there is a dark side. There are deviant people lurking on the web doing all sorts of horrible things. Yesterday, a hacker leaked the private pictures and videos (nude and semi-nude) of many celebrities, and they have spread across the net. For these celebrities, who are real people, I am sure it has been a very trying time; their privacy has been destroyed and I offer my sympathies. For the many people (if they can be called that) viewing and spreading the pictures, the occasion has been dubbed

It is pretty clear that iCloud has become a threat to most Apple users due to the recent "Celebrity nudes" scandal. I strongly believe that you shouldn't be worried about people being able to get a hold of photographs and videos of personal moments, such as family dinners and Christmas parties. This incident really makes you wonder just how easy it is to hack in to Apple's software systems, and how much Apple's developers have seen of our personal lives. Scandals such as thing will keep things talking, but will Apple release a statement regarding everything that has happened?
