THE T4 SOLUTIONS CHALLENGE
Creating a strategy for a better world: How the Sustainable Development Goals can provide the framework for education to deliver progress on our global challenges.

T4 and Take Action Global (TAG) are presenting a $10,000 challenge encouraging teachers to share practical ideas on how we can accelerate progress on the 17 SDGs.

Teachers will submit two-minute videos to demonstrate either what they did or what they would do. A 200 word written summary will accompany each video on the TAG website, and each applicant will be encouraged to share and promote their solution on social media platforms with a call to action to vote for their project.

Wer Lösungen findet, ist erfolgreich. Pragmatisch veranlagte Menschen haben es einfacher, gute Lösungen zu finden. Weil sie sich auf die Suche machen. Und so immer einen Weg aus dem Irrgarten finden.

Ein Pragmatiker ist nicht zu verwechseln mit einem Praktiker. Ein Praktiker ist ein Mensch der Praxis, welche er in der Regel der Theorie vorzieht. Ein Pragmatiker ist jemand, der ziel- und lösungsorientiert denkt und handelt. Dabei kann ein Pragmatiker natürlich durchaus ein Praktiker sein und ein Praktiker ein Pragmatiker. Beide Eigenschaften müssen aber nicht unbedingt zusammentreffen.

Yet Internet standards and protocols were invented at a time when less than one percent of the population was connected. It is time to use the data flows, the available computing power and the possibilities of interactive communication for human development… and to solve the serious problems we are facing. Laptops are so 2019: Raspberry Pi today unveiled its latest personal computer, which is actually a compact keyboard.

Raspberry Pi 400 is a faster version of last year's Pi 4 Model B (which is roughly 40 times more powerful than the original Raspberry Pi). But rather than selling another bare CPU, engineers shoved the processor into a portable keyboard.

"Particularly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we've seen a rapid increase in the use of Raspberry Pi 4 for home working and studying," according to Eben Upton, chief executive of Raspberry Pi Trading. "But user friendliness is about more than performance: it can also be about form factor. In particular, having fewer objects on your desk makes for a simpler setup experience."

Citing classic home computers like the BBC Micro, ZX Spectrum, and Commodore Amiga—which integrated the motherboard directly into the keyboard—Upton admitted that his company has "never been shy about borrowing a good idea.

This tutorial shows how to use Server-Sent Events (SSE) in an ESP8266 NodeMCU Web Server programmed with Arduino IDE. SSE allows the browser to receive automatic updates from a server via HTTP connection. This is useful to send updated sensor readings to the browser, for example. Whenever a new reading is available, the ESP8266 sends it to the client and the web page can be updated automatically without the need to make additional requests.

At first, many faculty sought to replicate online what they normally do in a classroom. They soon discovered this was not a strategy that was practical, as not all students could access synchronous classes reliably and many had challenges, such as other siblings or parents needing access to the technology, the costs of broadband Internet access exceeding their ability to pay, or were in different time zones. Nor was it efficient.

In fact, what faculty began to discover is what has been known for some time. There is “no empirical evidence that says that classroom instruction benefits students (compared to alternatives) from a learning achievement perspective”, a finding from the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance at Concordia University. Faculty began to experiment with personal challenges, small group work, project-based learning and the recording of short videos. They began to explore pedagogy, the science and art of instruction based on design.

Faculty sought help from colleagues with previous experience teaching online, looking for evidence for what worked in their discipline. They were inspired by examples for creative arts and music, where Zoom rehearsals and performances produced remarkable and life-changing events. Some discovered open education resources, materials, labs, videos, simulations, games, that helped them find new ways of engaging their online learners. Some truly innovative design ideas emerged, such a course on COVID-19 in which a different “angle” (epidemiology, economics, psychology, virology, politics) became the focus for each week taught by a faculty member from that discipline.

En juillet 2020, le Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement supérieur (MEES) a publié L’usage pédagogique de la programmation informatique, un guide destiné aux enseignants du préscolaire, du primaire et du secondaire. L’avez-vous vu?

Par cette publication, le Ministère vise à démystifier l’utilisation de la programmation informatique (aussi appelée codage) et la robotique en classe. Il souhaite également à contribuer à la réflexion sur le sujet en proposant des pistes pédagogiques pour faciliter l’intégration du codage dans les pratiques enseignantes.

Le codage, une activité pédagogique
La popularité de la programmation en contexte scolaire connaît présentement une deuxième vague. En effet, après le langage Logo et sa célèbre tortue des années 1980, voici que le chat de Scratch se répand dans les écoles du monde entier. Des applications plus simples d’utilisation, des sites consacrés à la programmation comme Code MTL et de sympathiques petits robots comme Bee-bot contribuent à ce succès. Aidé par la mesure budgétaire ministérielle qui permet aux écoles d’acquérir des ressources didactiques numériques servant à l’enseignement, le codage s’installe lentement dans les classes du Québec.

Experimental studies would assert the possibility that particulate matter may act as a “carrier” for the spreading of the viral infection of COVID-19.

This means that the virus could be carried over longer distances by fine particles suspended in the air and could remain viable for hours, days or even weeks in tiny particles. So, air pollution particles could help coronavirus travel further in the air, increasing the number of people infected.
